Question Time

Obviously Scotland focussed tonight. I don’t know if independence for them is good or not. But let them have a vote. It’s only consultative anyway isn’t it? Hypocrisy being thrown about by the Brexiteers.

SNP bloke on the panel picked out the Tory plant in the audience as he knew him. Should just be ordinary members of the public in the audience which is way this is a shite programme. Time to switch off.

Part of the Govt sponsored BBC Quest to lead the Vote No campaign

Normally don't necessarily buy into the BBC bias stuff but the last few months coupled with the changes at the top that are Tory leaning and Tory donors are seeing me actively avoiding BBC politics cover because its level of bias has become so evident. Like the Tory Party the new DG has managed out dissenting voices is disgraceful - when Keunessberg moved on/up and Chris Mason got her gig as political editor the change in his views and approach was evident from day one.

Part of thinks Scotland should have a choice to vote for independence after what has happened in the 8 years since.

Wholely, I hope they continue to be part of the Union.

One question came up tonight which I never even considered...wouldn't Scotland be defenceless if they became Independent?

They wouldn't have a Navy, Air Force, (don't know if some of the Scottish Army Regiments would revert back to the Union countries) , but the British Army defend the Union countries right?

Plus they would have to rejoin NATO, which isn't quick and easy.

Then there is the border with the EU and all those complications.

I can see plus and minus for them to be independent, but with COVID, cost of living crisis, inflation and the SNP aren't doing a great job with their health service and education...I wondering is Independence a priority right now?

Why would Scotland ever need an army? The only reason I can think of is if England elects its own version of Putin and he/she decides to invade Scotland to bring the Union back together.

Hypothetical scenario... An independent Scotland with no defence structure would be prime North Atlantic real estate for Putin The Invader.

If he has the balls to do Ukraine, he might see Scotland as a 'gift'.

I hope it's very unlikely, but with that guy, who knows?

Scottish independence would look a lot like Brexit in reverse. They'll try and jump on board with the EU again but the obstacles and hurdles in the way will just mean they end up more fucked than they currently are. There are so many things they'd remain reliant on the UK for and it would be so difficult for certain obstacles to be overcome - trade etc if they did seek to re-join the EU. They'd end up getting fucked over by the EU and fucked over by the UK. Which makes it all the more likely they'll vote for it because, well, they're Scottish.

I think Scotland will be alright. The 19th Century map that Putin has on his wall doesn’t show Caledonia as part of Russia.

The same argument could be made about Ireland?

Army, Navy, Air Force aren't only for wholesale war, plenty of enforcement and monitoring of local region, e.g. control of fishing rights/vessels and supporting civil protection.

The common sense strategy would be Britain takes it time removing it's bases and Trident so Scotland can rejoin NATO.

Before Ukraine I would have thought the scenario impossible, but the waters around Scotland might entice Russia's Bastion strategy, the energy resources of Scotland would be tempting to create more disruption in Europe. In effect, would be Russia's Gilbraltar..

Looked at that last night, thinking Ireland would be a Russian target not being part of NATO.

The only explanation I can see is their war neutrality position. Sweden and Finland had the same stance and maybe Russia don't see the neutral countries as a threat or the optics internationally would damage Russia. But Sweden and Finland have since changed their stance with the Ukraine situation.

Maybe Scotland could become a War neutral country, that might protect them?

Hopefully all countries can become War neutral!

You mean the Scots might vote for something on principle? Just like the English except the Scots would know what they were doing.
