Quitting work on the spot

Sarasota, I'm jealous as fuck, always been one of my fave places in the world ever since getting introduced to the place 20 years ago by an ex.
My area was from south of Tampa - Apollo Beach - all the way down to Port Charlotte. A 90 mile stretch with Bradenton / Sarasota in the middle. The best part of the job was working on Long Boat Key across from Sarasota but if I timed it wrong getting on / off the island was a nightmare at rush hour.

Walked out a job once. Worked for an insurance brokers and to say I was thrown in at the deep end is putting it mildly. Ended up on my own at a branch when there should have been three of us. A mate of the managing director kicked off because he couldn't get through on the phone. MD came in and told me I'd be in his office for a bollocking on Monday morning, I told him he'd be talking to himself and gave him the office keys. On the Monday I was being interviewed for another job which I was offered straight away. Got very lucky

Another quick update for those who are still interested.

Not heard anything at all from HR or the CEO since 20th Dec when the CEO sent me a very templated email saying “I accept your resignation” - that’s the thanks that 6 years of hard graft gets you, think it says it all. I am currently working from home, and by working I mean, sitting on my emails reading Bluemoon and doing the bear minimum to make sure nothing blows up.

I am hearing whisperings that I am not the only member of the management who has rocked this particular boat over Christmas so I suspect there may be some firefighting happening behind the scenes. The word through the grapevine is that there’s another person with a potentially strong constructive dismissal case (slightly different to mine but same root cause) and they’re now in scrambling mode.

Last time I posted, I mentioned that literally a few hours after handing in my notice a company got in touch with me for an initial discussion with their HR. I spoke to them, very nice people. Got put through to a second round interview with the hiring manager today who I had a great conversation with. It’s clearly a company of young but extremely bright people. Not detected any egos so far, they seem super down to earth and… dare I say like mature adults. Still early days to know for sure. Different industry. Really interesting business that’s making a positive societal impact and doing some good in the world (which is rare).

I really hope I get a call back for a final round interview. I’d be a little surprised if I didn’t, the interview went great, it felt like a natural conversation. They’re looking for somebody with a certain skillset they don’t have yet that fits my profile well. Suggests a really good fit.

I start 2024 full of optimism but maybe a little more trepidation.

Fair play to you pal, the Harry Chrishna's isn't for everyone, fingers crossed

The old Dilbert Principle

Very true though, some people should just never be line managers let alone senior leaders. Who knows, maybe I’m one of them!
Not quite.
The 'Peter Principle' assumes that employees are promoted based on success until they attain their personal 'level of incompetence' and are no longer sufficiently competent to progress further.
The 'Dilbert Principle', by contrast, involves the act of kicking a useless twat upstairs (usually into management) where they can do less damage. Normally, said twat has been fucking useless in every position they've held to that point.
I can personally attest to the truth of both theories having had the pleasure of working alongside arseholes of all types.

Life truly is a cornucopia of cunts. A veritable arsehole rainbow, so to speak.

Cheers mate. I am 100% raising it with HR - but as others have said, I don’t think I have anything to gain by being a stick in the mud. I’m going to, in a professional way, state my opinion. Whether anything happens is another matter, given his station.

What you have to remember is that HR's role is to support management. As your issue is with the CEO, making a referral to them will not help much. The only reason it would be useful to do so would be as a precursor to a claim via an Employment Tribunal. After all, it is helpful to go through internal processes before going to an ET but then you don't seem to have a case.

Good luck in your job search. Most of us have had to work for insufferable wankers at some time.

I am dreading going back to work on 8 Jan. We have competitive assimilations for six roles but I have ten staff. Thus, I have to make four redundant.

Yes I do agree and my position has evolved a bit since I made the above post. My original plan was to only feedback to HR if it was part of a process guaranteed to include the CEOs paymasters on the board. But then I was speaking to a close former colleague who knows the situation well and he said to make it worthwhile feeding anything back I need to be committed to fully taking him down. He’s right, it’s either build a bonfire and put him on it, tribunal, full works… or just move on with my life. I’m not sure I have the energy for that fight, if I’m honest.

Simply trying to mortally wound his ego might make me feel better but achieves very little in the grand scheme of things. It doesn’t even really help the colleagues I leave behind in any tangible way.

Sorry to hear your situation, I’ve only needed to be part of a redundancy process once, and I’d rather not do it again. Tough time of year.
