Quitting work on the spot

I had made a decision to give up work at the end of 2007, after the company I worked for relocated in 2000 from Broadheath to Cadishead. My boss was a wishy washy fart who only looked after his own interests and drove me round the bend. As I had not signed a contract of employment I was only required by law to give a weeks notice. The last working day of 2007 was a Friday which was when I worked afternoons (every body else finished at lunchtime) so I could back-up the computer system and shut it down for the weekend. I walked in to work at noon and handed my resignation letter to the boss who finished at 12:30. As the firm was closed for 10 days that was the last working day for me. I have loved retirement.
...............and so have I. :)

One of the best lifestyle decisions I have made. Not sure how I found time to work to be honest!!!

have you documented everything mate? where, date, time, people present, what was said and more importantly how it made you feel, only focus on facts and try to take emotions out and I know that is difficult, employers have a duty of care and are frightened when you use that against them in the same way as your wellbeing.

The first consultancy I worked for post-grad I worked 60-70 hour weeks for 18 months for £24k pa.
At my first consultancy I was told that I had to arrive before the first of the client's staff (so no later than 7:30am) and couldn't leave until the last of the client's staff had left (so that was rarely earlier than 7pm). Plus I generally was expected to come in at least one day at weekend (which was often both). Think I was on about £22k, plus a nice car.

Lost it with my task manager (who was a bullying twat) when he told me I couldn't go to our weekly 5-a-side game on Monday lunchtime, physically went for him and was told resign or be sacked. So I resigned.

15 years later I went back to the same client as a freelance contractor and some of the people I'd worked with were still there. At lunchtime on my first day one of them said I had to go somewhere with him but wouldn't tell me what it was about. Then they took me to the other office, where the old gang had gathered and presented me with the 'Colin Savage Award' that they'd been giving annually for the person who (and I quote) 'Didn't take any shit from their manager'.

I once quit a job in Manchester when I was around 23/24 whilst on a trip to San Francisco.
Was a spur of the moment thing and can't recall why I did it. I was staying with a couple in Oakland Cali for two weeks (family friend).
He ran a dance record label in San Francisco (was originally from the UK). this was early/mid 90's and the 'interweb highway' was just emerging.
I was seeing a girl back in Manchester, but was brief fling. She may have planted the idea of resigning, or perhaps I read too much Kerouac in Northbeach area of SF.

So I wrote a letter, borrowed the fax machine and that was that.

Quite a cool story until I realise fax machines age me more than I thought....so tend to skip that detail.

Ended up staying a few more weeks in SF staying in a YHA place. Remember walking arm in arm with two very fit blonde girls over from the UK, ended up 'snogging' one of them. Then did the same with a girl who worked on the reception of the YHA.
As a shy kid growing up, I did wonder how I pulled stuff like that off back then.
I'm not sure I ever bettered those moments tbh.

I work in consulting mate - to say it’s full of total cunts is understating it. I’ve worked for many of them and been here many years so I’ve taken my fair share of disrespect.

I was already likely to quit because of the issues I talked about with processes and how impossible it makes doing my job. But I assure you despite all that, he crossed a line with the message he sent. Which he has done before. Like I say… this is just the straw that broke the camels back.

I will say nobody needs or should have to put up with abusive behaviour in any job.

So indeed, I am taking your advice and fucking off somewhere else.
No job is worth putting up with that kind of shit. Good luck pal.

Great to hear there are new merchandisers joining the team!

You failed to mention the appointement of a new area manager in the Sarasota district. This was of particular interest to me because as of up to 4 weeks ago this was the post that I held for the past 2 years and 5 months until receiving a phone call from Greg and some clown from HR informing me that the post of area manager was no longer viable.

I subsequently took the role of part time utility person (I figured 28 hours part time is better than no hours until I find employment with benefits elsewhere), so you can imagine my surprise when being informed today that the role of area manager had been resurected without any opportunity for myself to be in a position to be re-employed in the role I had held for the past 2 and a half years.
I was even more surprised that I was not informed about this post by yourself, but by the new person given the post - who was clearly very embarressed / uncomfortable to be put into that position.

You clearly either lack a pair of balls or just think I am so grateful to be offered a part time role with no benefits (against being let go completely) that I would not find the appointment of a new area manager (in the region I had been managing for 2 years and 5 months until 4 weels ago) a complete piss take (pardon my English). Oh yes, I am English, fortunately for you and the clown in HR this is America. In Britain, you cannot lay someone off and 4 weeks later appoint someone else in their role. An employment tribunal would come down heavily against the company and would rule in favour of the employee. But I am learning that in America, the Land of the Free..... that means employers are free to walk all over employees without any legal comeback.

In short, four weeks ago I was informed my role as area manager had ceased to exist.
A clown in HR informed me I had 5 days personal days to take. I took them and was then subsequently informed by said clown that I only had 2 days personal days to take - so I lost 3 days pay when I could have worked. In fairness, she apologised if she had got it wrong. I accepted the apology - but it didnt compensate for the 3 days pay I could have received.......
Now I have been informed by my new area manager, that my old role has been brought back!

If I was a man stood on a beach and a seagull shit landed on me I would think ''that was unlucky''.
If a second seagull then shat on me, i'd think ''wow what were the odds on that?
If a third seagull managed to shit on me..... I'd think ''Maybe it is time to move from this spot''.

And that is where I am now.
Having been shit on three times, please accept this email as my on the spot resignation.

I have had 3 great years working for Jacent. I've not had a days sick leave and covered many of my colleagues through the Covid times and their vacation times. Jacent certainly had their monies worth, I gave 100% and yes I was paid accordingly.
There are some great people working for Jacent - I want to name my merchandisers Yvonne, Ann, Nicole, Barbara, Marlene, Vivian, Terry, Davie and Bridgette as well as Rick, Lynn, Patty, Donna and Sheila
Also a fantastic mention to Adrienne / Jason / Tiffany / Latasha in the HQ in Pennsylvannia. They work very hard and have always been there for me.

I make no apologies for the rant. It saddens me to have to make it, but you have to understand you can only push people so much before they push back. There is a lot of unrest / confusion amongst merchandisers right now due to recent changes. Communication (or the lack of) is the main issue.
For Greg / Stacie / the clown in HR - please remember, without the merchandiser on the ground, there is no Territory Manager, Regional Manager / Clown in HR.......

Treat all employees with the respect and dignity that they deserve.

Here endeth the sermon.

Top rant. Shirley you could have sued the clown for “funfair dismissal” though?

Where’s my coat?

Sarasota, I'm jealous as fuck, always been one of my fave places in the world ever since getting introduced to the place 20 years ago by an ex.

My area was from south of Tampa - Apollo Beach - all the way down to Port Charlotte. A 90 mile stretch with Bradenton / Sarasota in the middle. The best part of the job was working on Long Boat Key across from Sarasota but if I timed it wrong getting on / off the island was a nightmare at rush hour.

Walked out a job once. Worked for an insurance brokers and to say I was thrown in at the deep end is putting it mildly. Ended up on my own at a branch when there should have been three of us. A mate of the managing director kicked off because he couldn't get through on the phone. MD came in and told me I'd be in his office for a bollocking on Monday morning, I told him he'd be talking to himself and gave him the office keys. On the Monday I was being interviewed for another job which I was offered straight away. Got very lucky

Another quick update for those who are still interested.

Not heard anything at all from HR or the CEO since 20th Dec when the CEO sent me a very templated email saying “I accept your resignation” - that’s the thanks that 6 years of hard graft gets you, think it says it all. I am currently working from home, and by working I mean, sitting on my emails reading Bluemoon and doing the bear minimum to make sure nothing blows up.

I am hearing whisperings that I am not the only member of the management who has rocked this particular boat over Christmas so I suspect there may be some firefighting happening behind the scenes. The word through the grapevine is that there’s another person with a potentially strong constructive dismissal case (slightly different to mine but same root cause) and they’re now in scrambling mode.

Last time I posted, I mentioned that literally a few hours after handing in my notice a company got in touch with me for an initial discussion with their HR. I spoke to them, very nice people. Got put through to a second round interview with the hiring manager today who I had a great conversation with. It’s clearly a company of young but extremely bright people. Not detected any egos so far, they seem super down to earth and… dare I say like mature adults. Still early days to know for sure. Different industry. Really interesting business that’s making a positive societal impact and doing some good in the world (which is rare).

I really hope I get a call back for a final round interview. I’d be a little surprised if I didn’t, the interview went great, it felt like a natural conversation. They’re looking for somebody with a certain skillset they don’t have yet that fits my profile well. Suggests a really good fit.

I start 2024 full of optimism but maybe a little more trepidation.

Fair play to you pal, the Harry Chrishna's isn't for everyone, fingers crossed

The old Dilbert Principle

Very true though, some people should just never be line managers let alone senior leaders. Who knows, maybe I’m one of them!
Not quite.
The 'Peter Principle' assumes that employees are promoted based on success until they attain their personal 'level of incompetence' and are no longer sufficiently competent to progress further.
The 'Dilbert Principle', by contrast, involves the act of kicking a useless twat upstairs (usually into management) where they can do less damage. Normally, said twat has been fucking useless in every position they've held to that point.
I can personally attest to the truth of both theories having had the pleasure of working alongside arseholes of all types.

Life truly is a cornucopia of cunts. A veritable arsehole rainbow, so to speak.

Cheers mate. I am 100% raising it with HR - but as others have said, I don’t think I have anything to gain by being a stick in the mud. I’m going to, in a professional way, state my opinion. Whether anything happens is another matter, given his station.

What you have to remember is that HR's role is to support management. As your issue is with the CEO, making a referral to them will not help much. The only reason it would be useful to do so would be as a precursor to a claim via an Employment Tribunal. After all, it is helpful to go through internal processes before going to an ET but then you don't seem to have a case.

Good luck in your job search. Most of us have had to work for insufferable wankers at some time.

I am dreading going back to work on 8 Jan. We have competitive assimilations for six roles but I have ten staff. Thus, I have to make four redundant.

Yes I do agree and my position has evolved a bit since I made the above post. My original plan was to only feedback to HR if it was part of a process guaranteed to include the CEOs paymasters on the board. But then I was speaking to a close former colleague who knows the situation well and he said to make it worthwhile feeding anything back I need to be committed to fully taking him down. He’s right, it’s either build a bonfire and put him on it, tribunal, full works… or just move on with my life. I’m not sure I have the energy for that fight, if I’m honest.

Simply trying to mortally wound his ego might make me feel better but achieves very little in the grand scheme of things. It doesn’t even really help the colleagues I leave behind in any tangible way.

Sorry to hear your situation, I’ve only needed to be part of a redundancy process once, and I’d rather not do it again. Tough time of year.
