Quitting work on the spot

A couple of ideas:
Are there other people in a similar position to you?
Who are the other leaders (CFO, HR, Sales Director?)
Could you get a group of 3 managers together to raise the issue of this guys behaviour with other board members and try to get change that way?

You can make the decision to leave, before you hand in your notice. That, in itself, may make things a bit easier, just knowing that it's going to end, and on your terms. Get your CV in order over Christmas. Contact some recruitment agencies and let them know you're on the market and get a feel for the mood in the industry. If it's bright quitting without something else might be worth the gamble.

I quit a job once without any real plan. I got a job in a different field after a couple of months and it took my career on a whole new trajectory where I got to travel the world and see places I never would have otherwise.

I would be straight in to the HR department in the morning putting in a formal complaint, I would ensure you push the mental health aspect but be careful not to abuse it in any way. Insist on nothing less that a full written apology from your boss. Once you get the apology then had the notice in.

To clarify, I’m not talking about just walking off the job and going awol. I’m talking about serving notice. When I say on the spot I just mean doing it on a whim without having any real plan of what comes next, I’m not advocating breaching contracts.
I once quit a job that I’d been in for 7 years without much thought and whilst it was an emancipating experience it was tough finding another role and I was all set to start a call centre job just as a small IT contract came up. I was moving from one industry into IT too.

The sensible answer is, of course, to find another job first before quitting. If you’re out of a job for a longish period (3months plus) then you’ll be facing questions from new employers about how you’ve been supporting yourself in the meantime and providing evidence. Not easy if you’ve not been signing on.

I wish I could walk. My workplace is toxic, it’s killing me and my mental health but I live in a part of the country where jobs are scarce and I need to earn what I do to take care of my family. 44 hours a week trapped in what feels like a black hole.

Best of luck to the OP, do what feels right and what makes you happy.

Shame to hear that. Must be pretty damn toxic too, for someone like you to say that, as I imagine you to be of somewhat thick skin. In not at all any kind of a dig way.

I was offered two jobs last week. Couldn’t quite believe it.
Where I work has become an absolute nightmare, after almost 30 years I can’t quite believe I am going to leave in the new year.
I intend to hand my notice in on Wednesday purely to get a reaction and hopefully to send the manager off to a not so merry Christmas.
There’s only 4 on our team, one’s retiring in March, one’s constantly looking for other jobs, one’s an agency worker - who they’ve finished once and now I am off too.
Fuck em.

Not a man alive that can't be brought to book by shit under his car door handle and vaseline on windscreen wiper blades.
