R.I.P Gordon Banks

I'm sure we'll see many times today the save from Pele in 1970 world cup. Just fantastic!

RIP Gordon.
Remember watching a testimonial at Maine Road (?Johnny Hart) v Stoke, and in the second half there was Banks in the Stoke goal and Bert Trautmann in City's. Joe Corrigan sat behind Bert's goal, learning from the master.

Two of the world's best ever goalies on the same pitch at the same time - for a testimonial!

It's funny really. You look at old football matches and everything is much slower, less athletic and so on. And then you see that one and you still wonder how the hell he did it - especially if you freeze frame it at the point Pele makes the header and Banks is still trying to get across the goal.

Of course he made many, many other superb saves. But that one is globally iconic, not just in England. And if someone is to be remembered most of all for one thing, that's not a bad one at all.

RIP Gordon. A great keeper. We should have bought him. I remember at the time people saying £50,000 (?) was too much, but I believe keepers are the most valuable individuals in a team. The next week, there was a chant on the Kippax:
"You can stick Gordon Banks up your etc." Totally wrong.

"like a salmon leaping up a waterfall" as Pele later put it
Wonderful-and he gets a gentle pat on the head from one of the players(Mullery?) after pulling it off..just another day at the office then-Class.

Seen him single handily keep city at bay 71-72 season at Maine road
Forwards that day summerbee, bell, lee, wyn Davies and marsh
City peppered the goal
City lost 1-2
RIP true great

Others have mentioned that performance against us in 72 - it was immense - there was one double save from Lee and Davies that has lived long in the memory and which in his autobiography he cited as his best ever save - but it wasn't televised (and was only for Stoke v City) so it doesn't exist. So pleased that I saw him play - sometimes these old players are hyped beyond their ability but I don't think Banks has been, he was one of the great goalkeepers and yet never played for any of the glamour clubs - but then it was a far more egalitarian era where the best goalkeeper in the world played for three provincial clubs and won very few club honours - although I suppose a World Cup medal trumps all those.

To be honest I can watch that Pele save over and over again. Just beautiful.

RIP. seemed a really nice guy.

A gentlemen of the game, loved and respected by the whole football family, should of been knighted imo, RIP Gordon Banks.

RIP Gordon Banks.

Great bloke. His granddaughter played in the same school band as my son, and I would see him each year at the annual Christmas Concert at Lymm Golf Club. He was a really nice guy. Condolences to his family.
