R.I.P. Johan Neeskens, Dutch football legend dies aged 73.

Wonderful player, i still remember how gutted i was when that dour West German side beat them in the 74 final.
R.I.P Sire

Me and my mate used to play football against each other and use two sheds as goals when we were kids.

We’d do the old commentary bit, usually City v United. Sometimes we’d be international teams and I clearly remember shouting out ‘Neeskens!’ when I’d rifle one in! He was such a classy player and legend.

He played with the New York cosmos in the late 70s. I remember him as a solid, physical, tough as nails midfielder who took. I prisoners. I would compare him to Nigel de jong but he was more creative and skillful. That’s how remembered hm all those years ago when I started watching football.

IIRC correctly he was a heavy smoker like Cryuff was. It’s hard to believe but many top players back in the 60s and 70s were heavy smokers.

Did he play alongside Dennis Tueart at New York.

People of my generation will fondly remember this guy. That Ajax side were outrageously good and they had the best football top in the 70s The Dutch side were just magical. For all the England fans who talk about golden generations, take a look back at the Dutch in the 70s - that was a Golden Generation.

Sad loss.
