What I read at the time 37m sane cost no add ons of note was reported.

Sorry I’m not sure I completely worded that correctly but I’m pretty sure every time we win the league while he’s a city player we have to pay them £1 million or something and for the champions league final it was £1 million? And so on or something like that although I’m not 100% on that.

Just checked this is the details

On 2 August 2016, Sané joined Premier League club Manchester City, signing a five-year contract for a reported £37 million transfer fee, with performance-related add-ons potentially making the fee £46.5 million.

Buy backs are only any use if when activated the player wants to come back.

Not how buybacks work actually. This has been pointed out many times on here. See Real buying back Morata when he wanted to stay at Juve for example.

We haven’t activated any of the buyback clauses because most of the players we sold aren’t good enough. G.Rulli, Iheanacho, E.Unal, Maffeo and many others all have buyback clauses in there deals and none of them are even remotely close to good enough. Imo Angelino could be the exception but all signs point to us going out and buying another expensive LB.

We did try to activate buyback on Rulli but he declined to be a no. 2 as it was a world cup year whether he was contractually obligated i don't know but we asked he said no and that was that.

Don’t know how reliable that source is, from what I’ve seen mundo is hit and miss but buyback clauses usually don’t depend on the player, similar to loan with option to buy clauses. The player agrees everything before moving ie on loan then if the club wants they execute the option and buy the player with no negotiation.

The player is aware of the buyback clause and knows that if it’s activated he has to move otherwise he can hold out for a different contract without a buyback clause. The clause would be useless if the club has to again negotiate with the player.
