Obama is president.

And what does that have to do with anything?. Obama comes from an upperclass family and went to Ivy League schools that start at the $200 000 a year region. He is also HALF Jewish white from his mothers side.

Why do people use the Obama card like it is some sort of proof America is not racist?.
Just saying that people who are not white can still acheive in the U S A

Black people are more likely to go to jail for a crime that a white person would get community service or an aquital for. So regardless of crime or not, you get more time for selling $10 bags of crack than kilos of cocaine. Then there is the 3 strike rule which states that you can be give life on your 3rd strike even for petty crimes. This rule is in effect used more often against black/hispanics than white criminals.

-- Fri Jan 06, 2012 2:39 pm --

Just read through the whole thing and the responses. It seems to me that as per usual you can make statistics say anything. On the face of it, there does seem to be a racial bias that some may interpret as being "engineered" that way by the white legislature. However, as is stated in the later comments, a much higher proportion of these crimes are commited by black perpertrators compared to their percentage of the population and therefore it is not unreasonable for there to more of them on death row. Nowhere does it say that they were not responsible for the crimes they were convicted of.
Reasonable response.

The bit at the beginning about Harris County was the first clue the article would be a work-up. Many readers of the Guardian may not know that Harris County is essential the city of Houston, with just over 4mil residents, which makes it the most populated county in Texas and the third most populated county in the US. 15% live under the poverty line, 20% of the children live in poverty and 38% drop out of school.

Capitol punishment requires a capital offense. The guidelines are legally established and the perpetrators race has nothing to do with it. Capitol offense murders occur in connection with another crime, like robbery.

It should be no surprise then that a third of all deathrow inmates and 50% of black deathrow inmates in Texas are from Harris County.

Its not mainly done by hispanics, minorities in America are only in certain towns. There is more than enough evidence that shows that the American justice system is corrupt because they make money from prison inmates. They can also use them as slave labour and alot of the laws made before and during slavery have not been overcome. There have been numerous lawsuits filed and won against racism in the police departments too. So if you have corruption from the ground up that is going to be the whole problem. Anyway this topic is played out and has been done to death.

More white people are involved in drug use than blacks but more blacks are in prison on drug offences...

Is there an actual fact to that like numbers and stuff?

Yeah do some research, it makes alot of people feel uncomfortable though

No. The three strikes deal cannot be applied to "petty" crimes, or misdemeanors. It applies to aggravated felony convictions and to the best of my knowledge only exists in California.

No and no. And selling drugs is a felony. Carry a weapon felony but white criminals get less charges for same crimes. This needs you to research first and then come back and debate because the evidence is there. I hate this discussion because it just ends with showing without a doubt how corrupt and racist the American courts of law are.

Thats an ancient story and another reason to dislike the "USA".

Harper Lee and "To Kill a Mockingbird" exposed the truth.

EDIT: When it comes to War, the USA and UK have been great allies.
