Racism in Football

No it isn't, if he didn't go down then Son would never have been sent off. He got kicked, he was entitled to go down and ensure Son got the punishment he deserved. It was completely professional. Son got himself sent off and to turn it onto Rudiger is quite frankly disgusting.

Feigning injury to get a player sent off is cheating. To argue that it is anything else is risible.

But that’s another argument for a different thread. This thread is about racism in football.

I have to admit I don't like the thread title. Racism isn't a football issue. People don't suddenly turn into racists when they walk through the gates of a football club and then back into liberals when they walk out again. Football has possibly done more to tackle the racism that was formerly rampant in the game than any other sport. Sadly it's sometimes the clubs themselves that let the side down, with Pep's ill-judged response to the Bernardo tweet saga and Liverpool's response to the Suarez/Evra inciden so they're not necessarily the best to deal with it (although they're better than the government)

When racism in various forms (antisemitism and Islamophobia, along with general xenophobia) has become the common currency of politics, let's not be too quick to take the blame for a few individuals that still blight our stadiums and allow the politicians to get involved and get themselves off the hook..

@JimB I cannot recall which thread I posted in but I said much of what you said regarding how everyone has jumped to attack a group of fans without any evidence. On television we saw Rudiger making monkey gestures to show the referee what he states he had seen. I do find it strange that Sky haven't been able to show any footage from their cameras of these fans. Further despite pitch side mics, nothing was picked up. I cannot say what did or did not happen and really no one else but Rudiger can, so why has the entire country decided Spurs fans, on mass, are guilty of racist behaviour ?
Perhaps it is a sign of the facebook/twitter era that mob rule is the norm, (The mob being the ones that have decided fans are guilty without any evidence.

There's a good reason for that. Specifically, that there was no racism directed at Rudiger. I am 99.9% certain of it. I should know.......because I am one of the fans, I believe, who is responsible for Rudiger's accusation. I was at the very front of the south stand, adjacent to where the Son sending off took place. There can't have been a fan in the stadium who was closer than me to where it all unfolded.

By way of background, for what it's worth, I have no real argument with Son's sending off. He did make a slight, if aborted, move of his feet towards Rudiger as he tumbled. Silly, spur of the moment action that, in today's game, will always result in a red card if spotted. Nevertheless, that can't excuse Rudiger's reaction. Mourinho said it best when he sarcastically wished the Chelsea defender a speedy recovery from the multiple broken ribs that he must have suffered. There is nothing more cowardly within football than feigning injury in order to get an opposition player sent off.

So, as English football fans are wont to do in such circumstances, we all chanted "cheat, cheat, cheat, cheat..." at Rudiger. It was at that specific moment that he turned and gestured angrily at us. And immediately went to his captain / the referee to complain about having been the target of monkey noises. So I am convinced that this entire controversy is based on a misunderstanding on Rudiger's part. When English is not your first language and when you are unfamiliar with English fan culture, 5000 or so English fans chanting "cheat, cheat, cheat...." unsynchronised could, I suspect, sound very much like monkey noises. The timing of Rudiger's angry reaction towards the fans and immediately subsequent discussions with the referee confirms that suspicion. The only alternative is that Rudiger is claiming that he heard a lone voice making monkey noises. And if that is the case, then I say that Rudiger is a liar. Not the remotest chance that he could have isolated that above the din of 5000 fans shouting "cheat".

Spurs, and specifically Spurs fans, are owed an apology.
I'm sorry but you have blamed the guy who was kicked out at by your petulant player, not for the first time then you call him a liar,he has been hearing racist abuse all of his life,i think he might know what it looks/ sounds like
You are quoting the most disgusting excuse for a man already, the master of dirty tricks, hilarious

This isn't the first time Rudiger has said this, the last time he did it got thrown out due to lack of evidence.

60,000 fans and only one guy hears it? Not even a mic or camera has pinpointed it. You would think there would be at least one witness.

If there was some shit then the club will deal with it accordingly and rightfully so. That won't stop Karen7 , Penguins and BJ boy foaming at the mouth anything to do with Spurs

There are racists among all clubs' fan bases. We know that. But it doesn't mean that we should allow any accusation of racism to stand in spite of the complete absence of any evidence or corroboration.

I find it very difficult to believe what Rudiger supposedly heard was monkey chants, no other players heard anything? The official's heard nothing? The steward's and fans heard nothing? The investigation has so far found nothing concrete? All very strange, and quite sad.
