Mike Keegan mentioned in a Daily Mail article that Sterling can buy out the final year of his contract for just 1.7 mil, forcing Liverpool to have to sell him in this window.

This cant be right, can it?

Unless they put some clause in his last contract which I find hard to believe.

From what I understood a player had to be at least 28 and in the last 2 year's of his contract to buy it out. It may have changed though.

It's the Webster ruling that you are talking about and under Article 17 of FIFA's Regs on Transfers it states that any player under the age of 28 can buy himself out of the contract three years after the deal was signed. If the player is 28 or over it's two years after the contract was signed.

All about the freedom of movement. It would likely see a settlement having to be met with Liverpool. It isn't as simple as just paying the remainder of the contract - Liverpool would be able to claim on future increase in Sterling's worth for the time period remaining on the contract - though it would still be far cheaper than paying his market value.

What if Sterling and his agent want 25m to buy him.

As much as I want Sterling at City I wouldn't be comfortable putting 25m in a 20 year olds bank account along with his wages.

Does it work like that?

If Sterling buys out his contract and rocks up here, the shit storm in the media would be epic. If you think we get a bad press now, if that happened, we would be slaughtered. Whatever goodwill we have with the media would be gone in an instant.
Hopefully, just the threat of him doing this will be enough for Liverpool to sell at a reasonable price.

I am highly doubtful that he will leave via the Webster ruling

It is most likely a play to get his fee down and in return get him greater wages from his next club

Wouldn't it be more bad press on Sterling and more so Liverpool that a player has gone to extreme lengths to get out of a club like Liverpool who pride themselves on being this elite club?

I don't see us getting much bad press out of it, the only bad press we would get is if we don't play him.

I'm struggling to understand how it works - didn't he sign his contract in December 2012? Which would mean he can only buy out the remainder then? It would depend on whether he buys it out or another club does. I know with Webster himself, Hearts valued him at £5m but based on his contract length they only received a fee equivalent to his wages for that period and an increase on his value in that time which was something like £675,000 including legals. The difference is that FIFA were involved because of a dispute over whether he had broken his contract under "Just means". He argued that the club had frozen him out and removed him from squad lists. With Sterling, if Liverpool kept him in their plans it wouldn't be a FIFA matter... there must still exist an opportunity to buy out his contract to free up a move.

I can't see that he could just buy out the contract and be a free agent. I think that there would be more players willing to do that in order to get huge signing on fees if it was legally a possibility.

There's supposed to be a gentleman's agreement between clubs that no club will sign a player who has used the Webster ruling to buy out his contract. If that's the case then we would be lambasted for breaking it.

You have to be joking, haha.

I am not convinced Txiki will buy that, he comes from an mindset where Real Madrid and Barcelona will do all sorts of tricks to tap up a player.

Where do you think the money would come from to buy out his contract? It would come from his next club. The rags could get away with something like that, even Liverpool could. Not a chance we could do it without getting crucified in the media.
