If Sterling buys out his contract and rocks up here, the shit storm in the media would be epic. If you think we get a bad press now, if that happened, we would be slaughtered. Whatever goodwill we have with the media would be gone in an instant.
Hopefully, just the threat of him doing this will be enough for Liverpool to sell at a reasonable price.

Wouldn't it be more bad press on Sterling and more so Liverpool that a player has gone to extreme lengths to get out of a club like Liverpool who pride themselves on being this elite club?

I don't see us getting much bad press out of it, the only bad press we would get is if we don't play him.

Reading more into it - he is planning on buying out one year which would leave a final year on his contract. I can't see how he can legally do that because the club are then left with the possibility of losing a lot of money. Surely it would be up to all parties involved in the contract to agree to that and Liverpool have no reason and no legal obligation to agree... I just don't get how he could do it. If he had a year left then it would be different but it just doesn't make sense. They'd surely turn around and say - you can buy the whole term of the contract out and they could argue for a lot more than just the £1,7m per annum he is on considering his market value.

If it was clear he could earn £150,000 a week, Liverpool would argue they are owed that much up to the end of the contract and if he had an offer on the table from us that would be evidence for them.

It's all very complicated but why on earth would anyone be able to buy out one year of a contract and still leave a final year in place... that doesn't add up.

Mike Keegan mentioned in a Daily Mail article that Sterling can buy out the final year of his contract for just 1.7 mil, forcing Liverpool to have to sell him in this window.

This cant be right, can it?
Typical City, he's only got 1.6 million in the bank.

There's supposed to be a gentleman's agreement between clubs that no club will sign a player who has used the Webster ruling to buy out his contract. If that's the case then we would be lambasted for breaking it.

You have to be joking, haha.

I am not convinced Txiki will buy that, he comes from an mindset where Real Madrid and Barcelona will do all sorts of tricks to tap up a player.

Where do you think the money would come from to buy out his contract? It would come from his next club. The rags could get away with something like that, even Liverpool could. Not a chance we could do it without getting crucified in the media.

Stony journalist fall out of favour, we might take a little bit of flak, but who cares. Most football journalists are pond scum.

Liverpool are struggling with FFP, so just the threat of the £1.7 million buy-out will be enough for them to sell this summer.

I personally don't think the fee will be higher than £35 million. For arguably the best player under 21 in Europe, who's also homegrown and knows the league, that's a good deal IMO.

Haha, you could buy Juventus for that.

All the big clubs in Europe have tapped players up for years,it's nothing unusual.
Apart from the rags of course, all their players come through their academy,as we know.

Sagna was coming to the end of his contract and able to speak to clubs.

If I am not mistaken, players are allowed to talk to other clubs when they are in their last 6 months of their contract.

So wont apply to sterling
