As was Phil. Until we see a run of games, it's pure speculation as to whether playing instead of Sterling would be a downgrade
It's not. It is speculation whether Palmer will get to Sterlings level, it is speculation how long it would take him to get to Sterlings level. It isn't speculation to say today and the start of the season Palmer isn't at Sterlings level, and why would he be.

I think you have expressed an opinion, not a fact. What Sterling has over Palmer is experience, which is different from who's the better player currently

Neither of us know how well each are currently playing, but we do know that Sterling's last two seasons were not as good as his previous, so it is not beyond the realms of possibility that Palmer wouldn't be a downgrade.

Time will tell of course

I suppose it's an opinion yes. Though if both players are with us at the start of the season, I'd expect Sterling would start the season starting ahead of Palmer.

The only thing Palmer has over Sterling right now is youth. He's not on Sterling's level even after Sterling worse season he was still 2nd top scorer in the Prem. He's not bridging that gap while on holiday or in a pre-season.

I love watching Palmer, very very smart player, but no not a better player right now or for this season.

So was Phil not so long ago
Palmer is 20 years old. He has 4 career league appearances.

When Foden was Palmers age he had 2 PL titles, 3 EFL Cups, an FA Cup, 41 PL apps, 74 career appearances, plus caps and goals for England.

When Sterling was Palmer's age he already had 20 England caps and a record breaking £49m transfer behind him.
Oh, and a Golden Boy award.

I love Palmer and think he could be fantastic in time but these comparisons to Foden and Sterling will do him absolutely no favours.

I think that you’ve confused being good for his age and having a lot of potential with being established as being one of the best players in Europe.
What Sterling has over Palmer isn’t just experience, it’s his development to become what Palmer might be, one day if all our dreams come true.
Indeed, if Palmer were as good as Sterling, now and at his age, then he’d be worth £150M+ and the biggest clubs in Europe would be queuing up to tempt him away from us.

I’d love to see him make it, I truly hope he does, but you need to separate dreams and best wishes from reality.

If they were that good though they’d have played more last season, I can’t see how any youth player could suddenly go just over summer from one or two sub appearances/carabao cup games to effectively replacing a full international multiple title winner with about 150 goals.

We’ll be weaker without Sterling, unless we replace him with a player of similar quality.
Palmer was injured for the quite a lot of the season.

One of the best players in Europe, when was that?

Correct Foden is once in a generation talent plus some players develop at different stages look at Kane for example:.
