Rangers thread 2020/21

I was never his greatest fan but I will give him credit for being one of the few ex Hibs players that played at that time fulfilling his potential.
Top of my head Kevin Thomson being the other.
Broony is a guy who if he plays for you you love, if against, you hate.

Sounds about right Benny. Rangers fans never forgave him for choosing us over them. I remember Derek Johnstone rubbishing our interest on Clyde and proclaiming Broony would be a brilliant signing and be announced the same week for Rangers. :) when he signed he became shite. Well, that's just shite. It's like fancying a woman when young who you find out doesn't fancy you and she suddenly becomes a dog. No, she's not a dog, she just had a better offer.

He clearly made the right choice given what happened to Rangers in 2012. I'm not sure what difference he'd have made at Rangers mind you.

Rangers won 3 out of the 4 titles the years after he signed & the title Celtic won was the year Rangers won both domestic cups & were in the Europa League final & lost the league at the end having to play 5 games in 10 days. Actually, Rangers won 2 of the 3 domestic trophies each of Brown's first 4 seasons.

Rangers entered administration in Feb 2012 & of course the the rest is history, so he would have had to have left then anyway. He enjoyed the dominance Celtic had of Scottish football with Rangers starting from the bottom up.

Could someone enlighten me please ? Always thought there was a City Rangers, United Celtic following. Is there a reason behind this or am I wrong ? Seem to remember Rangers fans in the Kippax. Was it do do with us playing at home on opposite days, or a religious issue ? Intrigued.

I think there's a notion that under Busby, United were a Catholic club. They've always had a relationship with Celtic and when players have had testimonials (Brian McClair, Ryan Giggs, Bryan Robson, Roy Keane, Mark Hughes etc), they've invited Celtic down to swell the attendance. My brother considers himself United first and Celtic second - although he's also a Wigan rugby fan despite being born at Hope Hospital over the road from Salford's old ground so he may be simply a glory hunter.

I believe, and I may be wrong, that this meant that City and Rangers were seen as "friendly" although I never heard of any matches between the two.

I met a group of Rangers fans in the late 90's at Reading away and went to see Rangers with them at Ibrox and City away at Walsall with them.

I know a lot of City fans have no time for either club but I have to say that I was made extremely welcome in Glasgow once people knew I was a City fan.

There are several City / Rangers forums on social media

used to be a time in the 70s and 80s when loads of Rangers fans came down to watch City especially derby day.

loads used to go upto Glasgow , we used to get the Tartan Special train which ran from London to Glasgow every Rangers Saturday home game, I guess similar happened for Celtic.

Rangers also opened up their Supporters Club next to Parkhead for us all day and night the other year

I also believe there is also a less publicised sectarian motive behind it, Manchester likes to distance itself from this but although this is not evident today when I was a kid it was very prevalent where I lived. And will have influenced my “passive” alignment to the Gers
Pipe Bands have regular parades on Sundays notably down Deansgate in Manchester, which from my experience, last one I witnessed was about 18 months ago are pretty tame events hardly watched except for chance curiosity by whoever happens to be out shopping when they pass.

As is well documented I and thousands of Mancs joined the party when they played that final at our place......
Subsequently they lost a lot of support that night, my city is worth more to me than a half cocked support based on a loose link instilled in me from childhood, I have subsequently try to distance myself from them since that night, having that scouser managing them helped, although did enjoy the demise of that twat Lennon and Celtic....couldn’t help myself

Good post. As I've said on here a few times, 1 of the problems of the 08 final in Manchester was that because of its close proximity, not only did the dregs of our support make it down, the dregs of society did as well. It's was a totally different demograph from the usual match going fans. My town literally emptied, including an unsavoury element that has no real love for football.

Unfortunately, you take a a couple of hundred thousand pissed up Scots, then screens malfunction, anarchy will likely happen. Not an excuse, & certainly don't condone it, but bear it in mind when thinking about the events.
