Real Madrid (A) | CL | Post Match Thread

Wed to offload savinho and Casper our scouting has been shite for a while and those players who battered Newcastle deserve better than this.
Tend to agree with you re: standard of players recently bought
However, every club has a core of 16 players that they use. Savinho and Reijnders are not in that category with us but Pep picks them as starters. Cherki and Nunes have been 2 of our better players this season but don't get picked for one of the most important matches of the season.
Thats not on Reijnders or Savinho but on Pep for picking them in preference to players more suited to playing against Madrid.

Valverde is the best right sided player on the planet whether RB or right side midfield. His versatility means he's also colossal through the middle. But we seemed happy to let him do what he wanted whereas when Doku attacked he had three defenders marking him..............
Really!!!

Not IMO!!!

Above Average and Versatile? Yes :0)

Best on Planet? No

Two of his goals came due to City Assists/ errors, and didn’t do a great deal in the second half, against a Poor City display!!

I’m probably not as negative as some others. I didn’t think Pep’s line-up was that strange (apart from O’Reilly at left-back), and the tactic of using two wingers 1v1, runners in behind and players in the pockets around the box with Rodri and Bernardo controlling the structure didn’t seem that crazy either, given the Real side we were facing.

We got into the final third plenty and had enough chances to score in the first 20 minutes. Then they score two goals through a mix of brainfarts, bad luck, and a player having the game of his life, before sealing it with one of the best goals we’ll see this season.

In the second half they just had to defend and didn’t give us any space. The line between genius and idiot is sometimes very thin in football — if we’d taken two of those chances in the first 20 minutes and gone on to win the game, Pep would probably be getting praised as a tactical mastermind today.
Really….when I saw the team I was worried. What’s wrong in coming away with a dull 0-0 or nicking it by a goal on the break.always keep thing tight in the first game and take them on in the second.
We need goals at the Ethiad, I bet the team isn’t as attacking as in Madrid

Hang on....

Did Pep cause the 3 defensive errors that led to the Madrid goals?

No I didn't think so.
Mate he picks the team and formations
Ask yourself why so many errors and why has the best keeper in the world shat the bed in
Competition he has tonnes of experience
I’d suggest those players last night probably
Didn’t like the tactics and this made them nervous. I’m probably talking bollocks but
There has to be something that usual reliable players looked like championship players once that first goal went in.
Amorim used to get by with rag fans blaming player errors until the penny dropped
If pep played that team and formation every week in the league we’d get mullered but he somehow thinks playing Madrid we’d be fine. Last night was on pep because he knows better and why he brought on reinders who everyone and his dog can see is fucking gash ahead of one of the players who played brilliant against the barcodes
Is beyond belief.

10 touches the whole game. Waste of space last night.
Yes, he missed 3 crosses in the first half, which was disappointing!!!

But his lack of touches, his not his fault, if the team doesn’t pass it to him???

The amount of times the ball over the top or pushed down the side of their Centre Half’s was on last night and not made was criminal!!!

But that’s not his fault!!!

Use him more and give him more chances??!!

It’s not rocket science :0)

I'm looking at this now as an opportunity to create another rich slice of City history. One of the greatest CL comebacks in history.

Part 1 is done, we move to Part 2.

When we look back at our famous comebacks, under the heaviest pressure, the last gasp victories against QPR and Villa are part of our City folklore. Before you wail "this team isn't the quality of those teams" think back to the Spuds 4-3 FA Cup win. They were favorites after the 1-1 draw at ours. They were better man-for-man all over the pitch. We lost Anelka to injury in the first half, shipped 3 goals and Barton took an early half-time bath. It was a question of how many more we'd concede, staring down the barrel of an embarrassing defeat, our only chance of silverware gone.

You know the rest.

Can we win by 3 clear goals? Of course we can. Have we recently done them 4-0? Yup. Do they fear us at The Etihad? Ask Valverde.

If we can serve up another Hamburg atmosphere and get an early goal, they will shit the bed. I'm sure we're capable of an early goal, it's the atmosphere that is more questionable.

The team will be hurt and want to put things right. It's up to our support to get right behind them from the off, lift the roof and history beckons.

It just might be a night for the ages.

I know we’re a different team but can I ask you to recall 17th May 2023…..City 4 RM 0 .
It can be done - it absolutely can…. No ifs or buts …just believe…it can be done.
Their heads dropped fairly early on, knowing that they were beaten and had no answer to our Bernie-inspired superteam.

If we score twice this time, they'll still have a lead to hold onto, so it isn't a similar situation, unfortunately.

To think that after that victory, the talk in Spain was all about the end of a RM era, imminent clearing-out, total rebuild required etc... They won it the next year.

I really hate losing to that lot.

He was a waste of space last night. 10 touches is embarrassing.

I agree with much of that. But after the 1st half we had to create more chances and we kept one of the best chance creators in Europe in Cherki for another 25 minutes on the bench.

Savinho/Semenyo instead of RAN was a bit arrogant and we were seriously punished for it.

Pep wanted to humiliate them and that didn't end well. Like others, he underestimated them big time.

Because they're fucking angry at last nights debacle which was totally avoidable. An abomination of a team selection and tactical set up. Saturday was an excellent performance with pace and intensity and was rightly praised just as last night's shit show needs to be called out. When we play well and win posters are happy and don't feel the need to vent ,it's called emotion. Whatever happens next week and if we play well and go down swinging I'll be as delighted as the next man but it will do nothing to apease the annoyance at last nights horror. Maybe if the players were as annoyed as the fans we might produce a night to remember.
Gave this a like , but what a great post , why the f*ck should we all be happy clappers , i vent at the match all the time when players make stupid mistakes but i also give praise in equal measures and more.

Not feeling too optimistic but with the right team selection, could still go through next week. If only that NOR effort went in.

Very tired of our TNT's treatment of City; Laura Woods smiling and laughing last night at full time was a full mask off moment. Something needs to change.
She’s an arsenal fan

Have to say, Reijnders isn’t good enough.

First off, I’m genuinely not sure what he “is”.

Second, he lacks the on the ball quality for this level.

Third, he doesn’t even have the physical presence / aggression / graft to make up for 1 and 2.

Poor buy, imo.
it was completely unforeseeable, anyway i know it’s his first season but swapping him for gibbs white would do us a massive favor. Can actually win duels, and create, doesn’t miss 4 big chances in one game. Add Anderson and we have a serious midfield

The expectation at the top is that we'll continually be contenders - reaching the last four - and that even when we lose we'll walk off the field leaving the opposition not quite sure how they won - and picking up the trophy at a frequency that takes us into the 'won it three times/four times category'. It's just my opinion. I think SM and Khaldoon see football from a more global perspective than the rest of us living in Beswick, Moston, Moss Side, Hulme, Blackley, Whitefield, Stockport, Hazel Grove, Cheadle, Harpurhey, Ashton, Glossop, Hattersley, Bury, Oldham, Bolton and Rochdale etc - while not losing sight of the bread and butter that feeds all this - the Prem. I've lived in half of those places by the way - the cheaper ones......
Don't forget about us posh buggers living in Gatley!!

To me that's why Cherki should be starting these big games, only one who can thread balls through very limited space.
We all see that, fuck knows why pep doesn't. It's sheer bloody mindedness or he's just not that genius we think he is. Just because Sav plays well for once doesn't mean he's a shoe in for the next game against the elite of Europe. Why drop your in form right back aswell ?

Loose-tongued people in junior admin roles at the club have let it slip that it's Crohns and City are working with the world's best medics to address it. Very debilitating. I wish the club would say he's playing with a medical condition.

We all know that a healthy Phil takes the ball on the half turn surrounded by close marking defenders, rolls them and surges forward with the ball under control before firing off a precision shot. At the moment he's recycling the ball - five and ten yard passes with none of the usual surge.
That’s really sad. No wonder Pep seems to get emotional every time he is asked about Phil. I’m gutted for Phil having struggled with major health problems in the last three years. Your health is more important than any sport.
