Real Madrid (A) Post Match Thread

I have had a real issue when it comes to Laporte for a long time.

He's a reactionary defender, he rarely anticipates because he knows he doesn't have the pace to get back in if he gets too tight.

In the biggest of games, certainly Europe, he has cost us plenty.

He bottles it in the big moments, at fault for two in the first leg here against Madrid, same against Spurs.

I don't trust him, because when things get tight, he gets tight.
The alternative last night would have been to play Ake. Do you trust him more? I don’t disagree with your premise but I don’t see us having a solution when Stones is unavailable.

Naive. Letting in one goal when they were doing the Hail Mary is fine, but react to that by taking ages to restart the kick off, go down before the kick off with an injury, cramp, what Keep possession, dive, go to the corner, whatever, just needed someone to say calm the duck down, don’t give it back to them and don’t just kick it long when it goes straight back to Eddie. Was the same in the first leg. We could wind up PSG and Atletico so we can do it.
Will we learn? It’s the little things - the ball boys pinging balls back to a Madrid player before the ball has even gone into touch & then being nowhere to be seen when they took the lead so we had to climb over a hoarding. Clever by Madrid. That wouldn’t happen at the Etihad as we are too nice (and I’m not blaming the ball boys for that) but feck it, we will have to be shithouse from top to bottom from now on.

Nobody will do it for us. We can’t expect the free kicks or the lucky breaks, no standing arms outstretched pleading for fair treatment, so take fecking control and do it ourselves, starting on Sunday. Four games. Take the lead, wind them up, kill the game, feck whatever anyone thinks of us.

86th minute, Somehow Mendy blocks the ball on the line and somehow it misses Foden, then Courtois makes an amazing save with his feet. Small margins again go against us. Madrid score with there first two attempts on target in injury time and then Madrid get the inevitable penalty. Then Courtois makes an amazing save from Foden and Ferna just cant wrap his foot around it to equalise. The smallest of margins.

We player really well, but the injuries to Kev and Walker cost us, yes Walker was a gamble but it worked and the subs were the right subs at the right time. We controlled the game and somehow we lost the game, that is football and its why its such a thrilling game.Yes its another disappointment in the CL for us and again i reiterate it was the smallest of margins that went against us. Its not the first time its happened and it wont be the last I fear.

Yes we can complain about the referee but overall i thought he had a good game apart from the yellows Casimero deserved and it was a penalty. You have to admire Real though, they have now done this to PSG, Chelsea and to us, maybe the belief they have that the trophy is theirs plays a part.

Now we have to pick ourselves up and win the league, that is going to be hard, the lads gave everything last night and it will be deflating. its an examination of character and as long as the lads show the same character as they did they last, we will win it.

a real fair assessment mate, but i do think not dealing with casimero was pivotal he could and should have been sent off.
the two most obvious yellows i've ever seen. you could argue he doesn't make the challenge on phil if he was already on a yellow but he's that type of player who can't help himself.
the fine margins are what is killing us in this comp, do we have it in us to ever tip the scales?

I know its only a game blah blah but this has absolutely knocked me sideways. To go out in the manner we have is just awful. Couldnt sleep last night and ive got up this morning feeling bereft

one minute sat there discussing how we are getting to paris…
The next im on my knees.

To me this is a culmination of a few years bad recruitment . Im repeating myself but we have had no left back for 3 years. No striker for 2/3 years (we knew sergio was finished). And if youre relying on a 37 year in a semi final then we are truly fucked.

Ill back grealish to the hilt because I truly think there is a player there but did we really need to spend £100m on him? Was he really needed?

i KNOW we are top of the league etc but the recruitment the last few years has at best been negligent but at worst heads should roll.

also pep not trusting the youth has heaped more burden on a very thin squad.

i dont know where we go from here. Sack pep? I feel like it right now if im honest but maybe ill feel better as the day goes on. And who would be the alternative?
Sack the barca boys at the top? Maybe but then are they the package with pep?

our scouting system/recruitment needs some sort of overhaul and players brought in who know how to get across this champs league line. Because no matter how much we hate it the club HAVE to win it. Pure and simple. Otherwise we stay at the level below those clubs who have.

rant over… happy fuckin birthday to me :(
Happy birthday mate....good post

Having woke up to find it wasnt a bad dream my main thoughts are with Pep, without doubt one of the best football managers ever how must he be feeling this morning?
He cant tell the media to Fuc# off (although I wish he would), he cant rant and rave on a forum, he cant get absolutly pissed & wake up in the gutter, he has to take it all in, dust himself down, face the media & get stronger, which he will do.
So come on lets get right behind the team & make sure we win the last 4 games!

Would be fine with him leaving. Don't feel any connection to him. He has had some excellent games but I would like to see us get someone in with a bit of pace.

We are so reliant on Walker to cover a counter. This side needs more pace. Van Dijk is an excellent all round defender but he knows he can beat most for pace and it frees up his full backs and the rest of the side to attack more and take risks.

We missed chance after chance after chance, whether leading, level or behind. Brought this upon ourselves and threw it away in an unbelievable manner.

just buy a midfielding bull, tchouameni or whats his name, someone whos strong and can carry the ball up the field
Perhaps. However, I suspect the management don’t want to do that because it then means adopting a different style of play, and that in turn means quite a few established players will start to look less comfortable.
