Real Madrid (A) | Post Match Thread

Nobody can criticise that tonight.
Job done against a good team and a diabolical ref 1st half.
We kept Real to a minimum of chances and in the end had them losing their shit claiming ridiculous hand balls and fouls.
If we had been the home team with a same type of performance as Real to end up with a draw, I doubt we would be impressed

A very good result given the obvious fatigue within the team, and the hot conditions as well. We’ve got more than enough to finish the job next week, and the players will be up for it.

My only concern is having to play on Sunday and the shorter rest period, but if we play anywhere close to how we played against Bayern or Arsenal at home then we’ll finish the job.

Next season though - and this isn’t a moan - we will have to have a bigger squad and more depth in midfield, as some of the players like Gundogan and Rodri are playing too many minutes and it shows on occasion.

Said this morning would be happy to bring them back to Etihad level, and on that showing it's a good result. Defensively we were very good, not as sharp as usual in midfield and never got the ball to Earling. Grealish played like he'd been picked for his defensive talents rather than being allowed to express himself in attack, Silva was way off it.

Nice to see the mutual respect from Walker & Vini Jnr after the game, shame a few of the other Madrid players don't show that sort of class during the game, too many dirty cheaters and divers.

And the ref was shocking

Real Madrid executed their plan of kicking our players in to the ground (knowing they’ll be allowed to do it), trying to get one of ours sent off, and hit us on the break to perfection.

Rudiger getting away with regularly rugby tackling Haaland and yet another American football block on one of our players. Thankfully Ilkay seems to be ok this time.

We didn’t play badly, really, aside from a few poor decisions in possession, but we did look more passive than expected, at times seemingly hesitant to pass forward when it is on, often passing sideways or back.

I am not sure if that was meant to be a tactic to get their players to come out whilst we are in possession, but it didn’t really work. They weren’t biting. And it just allowed them to keep their shape and look to intercept for the counter, which is largely what lead to their goal.

I am not entirely sure John’s role in this game was helpful, either. Especially if he makes the runs toward their box and then just passes backwards when he gets close to a RM player.

Not sure what we could do to get Haaland more in to the game given they were doubling/tripling up on him whenever we get the ball near the box, which doesn’t even open up space for others, because neither Jack nor Bernardo, or Ilkay have really done much to attack the space created.

It very much looked like our plan was to play for a draw, and if we could nick the win, even better.

I am still confident we do the job at home and will be in the final, wherever it ends up being played.

All-in-all, I can’t really complain too much. And I think Eddie and Rodri deserve immense amounts of praise for their performances tonight.
Well said, sir.

We looked knackered, tired passing every time we broke and guilty of trying to overplay again. But, take the draw and hope we dominate them at home, I worry how exhausted we are going to be after a hostile game at Goodison though, we need to try and get that won early and just conserve energy. It must have been in Peps mind not making subs?
If we went fully at them we would have been on the end of a heavy defeat

If there is an upside it's that City have seen the best of them but they haven't seen the best of City.
This 100%

A shit performance by our high standards and still we return with a 1-1.

We could rip these a new Arsehole next week, we have it in us.

If someone offered me that draw pre game I'd have taken it. Sets us up well for the second leg at the Etihad and if ever we're going to get past this lot at this stage of the competition this is the chance. Bring on Everton Sunday and the second leg next week.

Thought we were very controlled, and has learnt the lesson of a year ago. We defended well and did a professional job. Something we haven't done in this competition until this season.

King Kev that goal was a work of art. Massive performance from our Belgian Magician.

Bring on next week.
