Real Madrid post match thread

I think on reflection I rather we go down to ten than play Lewis or Nunes at right-back.

And giving Kovacic a run out when you've got a new defensive mid sat right there is just silly. He looks how Gareth Barry did in his final season.

"Just two bad mistakes at the end", you say that like it's the first time that's happened this season. Bad mistakes at this level crucify teams and are the difference between great teams and good teams, it's not something we can brush off like it's a one-off, this team has been making those sort of mistakes every second match since November and show no signs of letting up.
Ederson was having a great match but then gifted them a couple, it's not good enough from your number 1. He did his usual best to give them a pen in the 1st half as well but luckily the guy was offside. Rank poor decision making from him again.
If we play like that again next week we will be on the wrong side of a 3/4 goal defeat.
They outplayed us for large swathes of the match, we had a good spell before we scored and then for 5 minutes after. Struggling to think of another period where we looked like we were on top.

They did not outplay us. They had more chances but did not steamroll us.

I'm not seeing it as negative as you.

We scored 2 against them and they're effectively just 1 nil up at half time.

About Khusanov not being up to speed so we now just splash 200 million on players who are not up to speed ?great transfer window again, and if not being up to speed is a problem why the fuck was Kev playing almost 90 minutes there ? he didn't look up to speed from minute one.
and most of his passes were poor, gave the ball away on numerous occasions

Right. Let's dissect the corpse that is the 3rd goal:

Let's start with this. The beginnings. Fran Garcia has just jogged on to waste 60 secs as Madrid close out the game. Look at the time on the clock, the position on the pitch:

The centre half has punted it long, but I suspect he's done that b'cos he's spotted Mbappe running forwards unmarked. On the video, Dias is panicking just off screen as he's just realised F Garcia (just off screen bottom left) has pulled him way too far up the pitch. If you see a video, you can see Garcia constantly looking over his shoulder and enticing Dias further and further up, Dias gets 15 yards into the opposition half (in injury time!!) and he's realised and is desperately trying to get back under the ball. Stones, off screen, is doing nothing. Crime 1 has been committed by the centre halves.

Below, Mbappe is about to win his free header that was coming from a - as it turns out - well spotted long ball into the middle. Mbappe has a free and clear choice; square it to Garcia (bottom right). The counter is now well and truly on, Garcia just needs to test Vinicius & Lewis's legs late on, have a last late go they've been gifted by our sloppy shape from a long punt.

Which moves us onto Crime 2. Depending where you stand on the actions that follow, this is the most egregious (in my eyes). Kovacic has done well, he's pressed up on Camavinga initially and busted a gut to get back. He's telegraphed MBappe's header, which the Madrid man has slightly fucked up and lofted in the air instead of heading it down, and Kovacic steams over to save the day, to boot the ball into row Z, allow the City lads 8 or 10 extra seconds to get back and take that last whisper of a quarter chance away from Madrid. Well done Kova....oh my god what's he done:

Vinicius has clocked his body shape the moment Kovacic left the ground and set off (above). In the below, Vinicius has fully smelt Lewis's fear and is using his very good pace to shut him down. In the video version, there is never a moment where Lewis doesn't look scared and/or on the back foot, but below is possibly the time to act, the time when Crime 3 is committed. He HAS to commit. He's fucked, he's been dealt a shocker of a pass against a lightning quick winger with pretty much no cover. He must go full body, lead with the head, the foot, whatever works to either draw a foul or commit a foul. Take the ball or the man or both.

What follows is an horrendous waft of the left foot which Vinicius wins and just runs through.

Crime 4 is Ederson's weird little rush that he stop half way through. What i will give Ederson is that Vinicius missed. Shame for us thought that Bellingham has sniffed the chance the moment Kovacic fucked his pass up and has been running ever since, credit to him, that's decent and committed midfield play. Dias is still going bless him.

what a farce. what an absolute farce of a late game goal.

Slept on it and the first half Madrid were there for my the taking in my opinion, particular after the first ten minutes but we either aren't good enough or aren't willing tactically to take enough risks/play fast enough to scare a completely cobbled together back 4 (or most likely a combination of both).

This is in stark contrast to how their forwards play, with pace and freedom and different movements and patterns. It's chalk and cheese.

Ultimately it was individual mistakes that people will point to, and that's fair enough, but our lack of ambition going forward is the thing that upsets me the most and has done all season.

I noticed last night when Erling scored the first and ran to the supporters in that part of the ground that about 20 maybe celebrated .The rest just sat there. Depressing tourists.
Thought the same, some celebrated, the rest took a photo.

We were outplayed for most of the game , Ederson made numerous saves , correct me if I’m wrong but don’t recall Courtois making that many saves . Putting Kovacic on when we had the new lad on the bench was criminal.
Simply not good enough in midfield or defence .

we were doomed to fail when we raised that banner mocking Vini at the start of the match, all that is going to do is make him more motivated to score and assist, vini himself said it motivated him and he was MOTM, there is no point provoking someone if we can't back it up and win that banner should have been used if we won the game. As for the game itself, it's a miracle we were 2-1 up in the 80 minute as Madrid was by far the dominant team which just shows the regression of this team as this Madrid team was depleted with injuries and was there to be taken, unfortunately, we capitulated to schoolboy errors yet again, Pep brought in 3 singings to save this team but started none, I get Khusanov is inexperienced but he would be a much better fit to go on than Rico Lewis as he is fast and could stop counter-attacks. The loss here was deserved and unlike most years we weren't the better team, Madrid deserved to win so we just gotta go all out and attack next week, all or nothing. Ajax has done it before, and we definitely can although it won't be easy as I've pretty much accepted we are out of the UCL unless a miracle happens next week.

We’re that mentally fragile, it just takes one mistake and it spreads through the side. Lost count of how many times it’s Eddie.
The number of times the GK, whether Ederson or Ortega, opts for a long goal kick near the end of the game....

And last night wasn't the first time it's led to the opposition scoring.

It wasn't vintage KDB, but he wasn't as bad as many make out imo. The killer passes out of nowhere that only he can make weren't there last night, but he wasn't terrible.

However, around the 65th minute on the halfway line, several players battled for the ball which broke loose. Prime KDB would've busted a gut to get the loose ball which he'd have been favourite for, but he was too fucked to make the effort.

Pep readied the substitutes straight after this, & I was surprised a visibly knackered Kev wasn't taken off. What this showed is outside of our strongest 11, we've only got the elderly, infirmed & very young to rely on. This was a situation waiting to happen with such a small ageing squad.

We've recognised this & have begun to take transfer action. This will continue for another 2-3 Windows until we assemble a squad of quality with youth on their side. Unfortunately, we'll just have to hang on in there for this season with a top 4 finish & possible FA Cup win as our main targets. But we all kind of knew this before last night's match kicked off, so nothing much has changed in that respect.

Yeah but that's the thing, if your role is to take risks and play killer passes you have to make some of those, he made none which meant he was just constantly giving it away and putting us under pressure because Madrid were dangerous whenever they had the ball, Pep never fixed it.

Unfortunately Ake is too unreliable fitness wise, KDB has lost the legs as has Gundogan and Bernie is pretty anonymous in games. Rico is not good enough at this level and Eddie has turned into Claudio Bravo

And what's the point of transfer action if Pep is just going to bench them and when he benches them he doesn't even bring them on except one of them for the last 5 minutes ?

Scapegoating Rico Lewis isn't going to change anything. It just makes you look a bit clueless.
