If it's a trip considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force, it's an offence under "fouls and misconduct", and a referee can only play advantage after an offence. If there's no foul, "advantage" doesn't come into it.

It still wouldn’t be classed as a foul though.

It would. It wouldn't be counted as a foul by the statisticians. I've no idea whether they count a foul that isn't given because advantage is played but the referee then gives a card for the foul that wasn't given.

Cards don’t have to be only given for fouls though. It’s a pretty moot point, as advantage doesn’t happen that often. I’d be surprised if it was over 2 per game on average.

Dalot got two yellows without committing a foul at Anfield.

The ref that did not have much to do, waved advantage 5 times once for Utd, card given retrospectively after the ref has played advantage happen quite often and they are not given as fouls on the statistics.
The advantage is a tool that most refs use to avoid giving a yellow to the opposition, Conor Gallagher for example 5 fouls after the ball had gone yet was not booked, Joelinton in the cup 7 fouls after the ball had gone mostly on the kids yet was not booked.
