Ref Watch

I'm of the opinion that refs no longer make on the spot (no pun intended) decisions and would rather VAR make those calls for them moments/minutes later. Its their get out of jail free card.

May as well fuck them off and have VAR do the lot.

I am saying that referees are regularly not making decisions and are waiting for VAR. It’s not an opinion, it is happening. It happened many times today. It has happened many, many times this season (and not just in the PL). I was offering conclusive evidence that they are not following the protocol you are referencing.

You tend to respond with arguments leaning on what should be happening whilst many of us are discussing what is actually happening (with mounting evidence). We all know what should be happening. That is why your posts seem naive (at best).

VAR has fundamentally changed on-field officiating, regardless of where you stand on the “is VAR used for the manipulation of match outcomes” debate.
completely agree, and the reasons are psychological ones

If play stops for VAR when the ball is out of play, it starts as it normally would.

Yes, but the other guy is saying that referees are regularly stopping play specifically to ask VAR to make a decision.

I’m wondering how play restarts in those instances, if the VAR tells him there’s been no offence?

I didn't read that he was stopping play with the ball in play, but may have missed something. I've not seen that often.

If a ref is called to the screen and stops play as a result, and if he then rejects the images shown, then I think it's just a dropball for the side who has it.

I think it’s time the tradition of only one final per referee is reconsidered personally. When the rule was brought in at the start of the 1900s and until relatively recently, there was a high number of referees who shared the big games around. Now virtually all the big games are done by a very small group.

If it wasn’t for Covid, Atwell and Tierney would probably already have done one and you’d be left with referees who have done virtually no big games to choose from.
Attwell refereed the Carabao final Liverpool v Chelsea, a year ago (2022).

I thought the ref on Saturday was just another over=preening peacock, with the emphasis on the second syllable of that last word. I burst out laughing on 90+1 when Ashley Barnes got booked. There were worse fouls in the first half, and I don't recall the Burnley guy getting a card for the foul on Foden when he was past him and making a beeline for goal. The issue of yellow cards must be the most variable aspect of the game from one referee to another and from one game to another with the same fuckin' wanker whistling away or not in most instances.

I’m not sure if the League Cup also has a tradition of a referee only doing one final. It’s a relatively new competition anyway, without the history or the prestige that the FA Cup has traditionally have.

Apart from the two Covid finals, no referee has refereed two FA Cup finals since 1901.

Ref watch with Gallagher
Fulham‘s blatant penalty ignored and not brought up. Anthony’s kick out ignored and not brought up.
All about referee protection yet no action or discussion about Rat face telling the ref to fuck off again
Just another week of corrupt officiating swept under the carpet

I agree.

PiGMOL have divided it by having "elite refs"

Maybe they should scrap that. Celebrity refs being sent to officiate league 2/1/EFL matches to humble them a little. And like wise potential refs in the lower leagues get PL/FA cup/League cup final profiled games to get their experience up.
