Ref Watch

Made me laugh that the commentary said that they can go that far back for the offside, next breath the pen has been given.

I have kind of got used to our team getting reffed differently to every other in the Premier League. The penalty probably was a correct decision despite the offside as it was cleared and we had time to reset but you just know if that was a team playing in red it would be ruled out. Constant fouling by Brighton goes unpunished but as soon as we foul it's an automatic yellow card every time.

It’s an irrelevant stat. All three of our yellow cards were clear cut.

Neither team fouled that much, so none were for totting up.

Thought Friend was very good tonight.

I agree about the first two - Walker coming down on top the opponent's foot has been a yellow card every time I've seen it (and red if it's more aggressive). Cancelo was just late running into someone from behind.
Not sure that 20 seconds for the timewasting is reasonable - I assume that it was because Ederson looked set and then turned away from the ball again.

That’s why I thought he got booked too. Did the short/long trick to waste time as the CBs trot up, then set and then turned to reset again. He’d have been fine if he’d just booted it before the last little turn away.

Has the rule that says keepers can be booked for time wasting been introduced today? I swear I see it go unpunished at the Etihad every week
It was actually a good booking to take and did us a favour. I thought it took the sting out of the game as Eddie wasted time originally, then the ref wastes more time booking him.

Then the added on time allowed us the score a 4th.

We’ve won the league in goal difference before, it could be that booking leading to the added time and that 4th goal that wins us the league this time.

Indeed we can sort of brush it off as we were 3 up,but what happens if we were only 1-0 up you can bet we wouldn’t have got that pen ..
We probably would have as we get the second most pens in the league, i don’t think it was anything to do with giving it against us because it’s us and the world’s against us… it was just a mistake in judgement about where the VAR thought the phase ended when it actually didn’t (all the attacking players were still in the same positions despite the ball going backwards for a pass).

Good performance by the numpty with the whistle today, but the **** on VAR wants fucking with a hot poker
Good performance!!! We are 3-0 up and yet the only 2 bookings are against us. He also booked Eddie for time wasting and yet we see Burnley and the rest wandering around without punishment.

Good performance, get to fuck

It appears 'time wasting' only becomes an issue from the 80th minute. Keepers can routinely take 30 seconds for a goal kick, outfield players a similar time for throw ins but once you enter the business end of the game it's suddenly a bookable offence. It's a bizarre and completely disproportionate way of applying the rule which is almost always detrimental to us.

We were saying same in the pub, the time wasting we have to endure and Eddie gets booked it's laughable.

Nope, time wasting is only an issue when we are deemed to be doing it

My missus was at her first live game for about 3 years today, she doesn't like watching us on TV, so often switches off until something happens.

Sat on the train back, she asked me "why are we refereed different to the other team ?" She mentioned several incidents, a foul on Grealish which was neither given, but we would have got a yellow if it was us (in fact we did), a clear throw in for us given the other way, a clear goal kick for us given as a corner, and vice versa, both right in front of us, also asked why Ederson was booked for time wasting when we watch it most weeks and there is rarely a booking, just finger wagging.

I must be getting so used to it, I'm actually missing some of it now.

Ederson must be the most booked keeper around, it’s an absolute joke.
I remember the home game v Southampton a few seasons ago, they go 1 up in the 13th minute and the time wasting started, it was awful and Mason let it happen and added no time on at the end of the first half.
2nd half was again full of time wasting, Kun scored in the 70th minute then Kyle got the winner in the 86th minute. Only then did they stop time wasting.
90th minute Mason books Ederson for time wasting, after doing nothing to stop Southampton’s time wasting for 86 minutes.
We are officiated with a different set of rules and it stinks. We must have the highest cards to fouls ratio around, it’s like a card every 3 or 4 fouls and red tops it’s like 1 in 15. Sums it up with Grealish being the most fouled player 2 years running, joins us and things are waved away that he got in previous seasons

For the Brighton offside the commentators didn’t even mention a possibility of offside. I don’t remember a game where they don’t even suggest it especially as it was clear as day?

There's a very clear difference in the way we are refereed, conscious or not.

It's like they know city are the better team so are more inclined to give things the other way to 'even it up'. I'm not sure how many fouls their right back or lallana needed to make to be booked, but it's sure more than any of our players would get away with.. one.

Another way it manifests is in 'keeping the game flowing', where it appears the referee feels city, as a possession based side who like to get on with the game, would prefer to play on even when nothing is on, and often resulting in a period of several minutes and passages of play, in which time any potential booking for the opponent is forgotten. Whereas against city teams are desperate for the respite so free kicks are more common than playing on, bringing it more to the referee's mind that he just stopped the game and needs to caution a specific city player.

The most frustrating one for me though is off the back if the above, and we saw it again plenty yesterday, where there is a clear difference in when and how long after the fact, play can be brought back. Offside for their penalty aside, this same perception that city want to get on with it means that Grealish or Foden could ride several challenges, usually increasingly dangerous and desperate, as they attempt to get into the box, before running into a corner and having to pass it back. The perception is that city are dangerous from anywhere and free flowing, so we're 'allowed' to start again from the back. Contrast that with a situation against us, like yesterday, when they broke and dias had to make a full stretch header to stop the ball reaching their free player. If he doesn't make it the player is almost one on one with Eddie. If he does, as he did, then it goes back for a foul two passes before the one dias intercepted.

We've all seen the time wasting from visiting goalies starting with the very first goalkick. Loads of times, with a minute or so on the clock.
But l have never heard a single commentator appear to notice it or the crowd's reaction to it let alone criticise it for spoiling 'the product'.
Then eighty minutes later visiting players getting mysterious injuries involving medical staff ambling over to the East Stand side and spending ages before the player is up, hobbles two steps and then is right as rain. Meanwhile the cameras focus on fans leaving, fed up of hanging round whilst these simulated injuries are pretended to be treated and then the commentators become eagle eyed and draw attention to the leavers, having missed everything else for the whole match.
Refs should be criticised for openly allowing early time wasting from Southampton, Wolves, Burnley etc, although it might be pointless with these shameless wankers.
Oh l forgot the occasions when a fat ref waddles half the length of the pitch, wasting more time, just to mumble some half hearted words to the goalie who has wasted time on every single goal kick.
Match management they call it.
