Ref Watch

PGMOL and The PL don't want 100% accuracy. They are quite happy with 87%. The current system is probably capable of greater accuracy, but it is the scapegoat they need to allow them to manipulate the remaining 13% of decisions. It's what helps them get that new name on the PL trophy (Leicester). It's what they used to come so close in getting a second new name on the PL trophy in 2018/19, but we matched Liverpool and VAR in the run in, winning our final 14 League games. It's what sustains the illusion of a strong Manchester United.

If the PL really wanted the best referees, it could go to Europe and pay for them (Brexit notwithstanding) like they did with Jarred Gillett.

The PL and PGMOL need each other, and the last thing they want is greater than 87% accuracy for VAR.
I don’t necessarily wholeheartedly buy into the conspiracy theories re manipulating results.

What is more certain to me is that the broadcasters don’t want a system that’s too definitive in its calls as it would preclude them from droning on and on and on about VAR for ages after every match by way of making the most uneventful match seem filled with controversy.

It's a question of transparency. None of the issues around framing matter if VAR uses the exact same frame for every decision to assess the 'moment of impact'. The ball will always stay on the players foot for a period of time and given the speed cameras operate at these days it will always cover more than one frame. That's the problem, not just for us but for every club's fans, nobody trusts PGMOL to operate the system fairly and nobody believes the Premier League don't manipulate PGMOL to enhance their product.

I take your point, but since when was football about allowing broadcasters plenty of controversial moments? The first considerations should be for paying, match going fans.

Shouldn’t need VAR to beat palace
Ir wasn't just VAR though, it was the way the game was officiated from the first to last whistle. This 100% affects our decision making process on the field and ultimately the confidence of the players.

This is what we are up against EVERY SINGLE GAME in the PL which makes our achievements so much sweeter.

There is an unwritten rule that shit teams can waste as much time as they want. Nick Pope has 5 yellow cards in 115 games, it should be closer to 105. Ben Foster is another one, at WBA you could stick the kettle on and have a cuppa ready before he takes the goal kick. I seen a Northern Ireland defender get sent off in Switzerland for taking the piss at a throw in, it was almost universal condemnation from pundits, fans and journalists because it was so early in the game. That lad was shocked because he's gotten away with for years under the shit refs in the PL, as soon as he's in front of a proper ref he's taking an early bath before half time.
