Ref Watch

It's the subtle disparities in decision making that gets to the players. Kev and Phil well off the boil because of the way the game was being 'managed'. Real players were emboldened, and that gave them the edge.

It's something that's often difficult to pick up on when you get wrapped up in the action, but if you take a step back and just observe the actions of the officials you'll see subtle differences that make huge differences to the outcome of games.

Anyone remember the moment in the 1st half where the referee fist bumped Modric? Our players would have picked up on that 100% and I'm sure it must have got to them big time because that would NEVER happen if the game is being moderated fairly.
It was the same against Chelsea in the final. It was made clear early on which way that game was going to go just with the decisions. No sending off for foul on Kevin De Bruyne and a penalty immediately waved away. That would probably have seen City already win the Champions League.

The early Casemiro challenge on de Bruyne was an obvious card.

The one on Foden is more complicated. The ref played advantage, and the laws currently are that a foul that doesn't stop an attack does not get carded.
If that challenge would get a card for a different reason (e.g. recklessness), it would get a card for that. It is certainly possible to make the argument that the collar pull prevented Foden backing up the attack and thus should have been carded, but it is opinion.

As Orsato bizarrely avoided backing Casemiro at all, the argument that he should have multiple cards is hypothetical and meaningless. No-one knows what he'd have done if the first one had been booked (and Laporte/Modric would also have been card-free).

That BT were incredulous as Sterling's booking and Foden's 'foul' on the bloke charging up behind him said everything about the decisions.

The Walker/Vinicius collisions looked like one shoulder-shoulder, and one where Walker was looking at the ball. As a foul would likely involve a red card, I don't think there was enough certainty to do anything. I thought both looked okay.

The only thing City seemed to get away with was the looped ball that came down on Cancelo's arm.

Didn't know that. What a bullshit rule!

Think he's wrong, if I've read the post correctly, after an advantage he can't give a red but can still give a yellow.
That's my understanding of the rule.

A red card offence should result in an immediate stop in proceedings. A yellow can be issued at a convenient moment after the offence.

It would be circumstance-driven really - the two options are if the foul was stopping/interefering with an attack, or for other reasons (of more severity, as I read it). It seems to essentially downgrade the card one step. In this case, if the ref decided "attempt to stop an attack, ball possession retained so I'll play advantage", the ref was correct to not book Casemiro that time.
In general refs are advised not to play advantage for a sending off offence.

From the laws:

Advantage
If the referee plays the advantage for an offence for which a caution/ sending-off would have been issued had play been stopped, this caution/ sending-off must be issued when the ball is next out of play. However, if the offence was denying the opposing team an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, the player is cautioned for unsporting behaviour; if the offence was interfering with or stopping a promising attack, the player is not cautioned

Advantage should not be applied in situations involving serious foul play, violent conduct or a second cautionable offence unless there is a clear opportunity to score a goal. The referee must send off the player when the ball is next out of play, but if the player plays the ball or challenges/interferes with an opponent, the referee will stop play, send off the player and restart with an indirect free kick, unless the player committed a more serious offence.

Just seen Lampard has been charged for his comments about the non-pen against Liverpool.

fucking ridiculous, complains about the scousers, gets charged, complains about us, gets a fucking apology.
The FA will probably give them an extra point to compensate for the hurty words of the Everton manager

This is what the knicker wetters don’t seem to realise. When playing other top teams like dippers and Madrid the margins are actually very fine and refs make a huge difference, one way or the other. Dippers 45 league games without a pen against is such an obvious cheat, Milner not getting sent off, TAA playing basketball in the area, offside goals not VAR’d, both Madrid teams getting away with murder, it’s simply not 11 v 11. Yes we fucked up today, but we get fucked over more or less every week. And now the irony of another pen not given v dippers and Lampard being done for some incredibly mild comments. Fucking blatant corruption
Yesterday, some were talking of how Pep Guardiola will never win the Champions League for City and should be replaced if we don't win the Premier League. At one of the hierarchy clubs he would have won the Champions League with City already against Chelsea, maybe earlier. The decisions City don't get would have been given making all the difference. Same with the final this time and the league would already be won. Pep Guardiola has already spoken of hierarchy clubs and how it's so much more satisfying being City manager because City don't get given anything. City supporters should be proud to have Pep Guardiola representing them. City know what is going on and I have no doubt will only get stronger as a result.
