I think refs are consistent in themselves you know what you're going to get.
Some refs are zero tolerance for certain things. What would be a straight red.
It's easier with some sports to see that.
In rugby, for the most part, you know what you're getting from a certain referee.
Some are picky with contact in the scrums, some on clearing around the ruck.
Football is similar, not as easily spotted but it's there. Consistent in themselves with the decisions they make, but on a large scale they don't match up with other refs calls.
But it needs to be sorted. With all this modern technology it surely could be tackled better than it is.
That's not always true though, is it? And one of the reasons so many are up in arms.
Take FOY for example. In one match (the same match) he is not 'consistent' with his decision making. He sends Kompany off but he doesn't even book Giggs. He doesn't book other United players in the same match for several bookable offences (Jones and Evra come to mind immediately).
He then referees the game between Newcastle and QPR. He only books Derry for the lunge at Cabaye - Cabaye is then stretchered off. He also only books the QPR striker (can't remember name at moment) for a 2 footed tackle?
No it's not always true but in many cases it is. And I agree, it's not enough. It's not nearly enough, but at least you know what you're going to get, most of the time, but like I said, it's much easier to predict in a game like rugby than it is in a football.
It's a common problem in every sport at every level.
It has to be looked at. If he was to stick with two footed tackle being a straight red, no matter how safe they may look, technically he's right. Then let it be a red every time.
I'd respect him more for it, no matter how it looks. No matter how ridiculous it may seem. I don't think anybody would complain if every ref would give a red for that tackle, but let every ref do it.
But then you've got whole thing of how much pressure they are under. If they have already sent a player off in the game, if they made a wrong call earlier and are looking to make up for it. All these little things come into play when they are trying to decide what to do and make snap decisions. All of this has to be done in a split second.
I don't think they get enough help to be honest.
It isn't right that thousands of people can see a ref make a wrong call and he can't see it. The football powers are stuck in their way but it would have a more positive impact on the game if they introduced a televsion match official.
It would solve so many problems, and it would lead to less controversy and less frustration between fans.
Refs don't enjoy it. I've seen refs being escorted off the pitch many times. People throwing objects, and endless abuse at refs over and over again, why? Because of one misatake.
Things happen, human error happens and it could be helped.
But if the refs just set down a black and white rule set of rules that everyone had to follow, and it wasn't so open to interpretation, it might make things a lot easier.
Yes less logic would be used but there would be less hastle and grief over inconsistencies.
I think more communication would be great as well. If they talked more to the players. Instead of not even listening to them. I'm not saying that they should have a chat every 5 seconds, but their sanity, and for ours, it would be a bit better to understand why they made a certain decision. It would calm things down a bit that's for sure.
