If you mean the Lallana miss ? Its not offside because although Lallana is technically in an offside position, he's not actually offside because the ball is isn't played forward, its played backwards, so its a correct decision.

I was as outraged as anyone over the Sterling/Milner episode and almost as much over the penalty. But truth be told, we dodged a bullet in the first half when Liverpool could have had a penalty with the clumsy Yaya tackle - and he could have received a second yellow. On the balance, Liverpool still edged it on the decisions, but Oliver was actually pretty close to being an equal opportunity blind, incompetent, brain-fucked mutant.

I thought Yaya was going to get sent off in the first half for that challenge. Long way away up in SS3 so maybe not as bad as it looked but fair play to Can who got up quickly.

A lot of that was down to the conditions and if Yaya hadn't moved his boot it would have caught Can flush in the face.
Like you say, fair play to Can for not making more of it.

I remember from last season, I think, we had one ref who dragged play back after an inordinate amount of time to give the Dippers a free kick having allowed them to gain an advantage that they squandered. .

Sorry but I believe that's crap. The rule change was nothing to do with RVP. If Aguero is stood in an offside position when Sterling receives the ball, he's not classed as active at that point. If Sterling beats the defender and Aguero is behind the ball when he crosses it, I don't believe he would be flagged offside as play has supposedly entered a different phase. And the assistant definitely did not flag Lallana offside as it was right in line with where I sit and we were all open-mouthed.

The rule is pretty clear it states that a player who is offside (lallana in this instance) at the moment the ball is touched or played by a team mate (Wijnaldum) is only penalised once he (lallana) becomes involved in active play 'by' playing or touching a ball that has been passed or touched by a team-mate. The moment Firmino passes the ball to Lallana he becomes 'active' and therefore offside as he was in an offside position when the ball was played through to Firmino. If Firmino had gone on to score himself then the goal would have correctly stood and the fact Lallana is stood offside when the ball is played becomes irrelevant.

This rule prevents you standing in an offside position waiting for the play to drop back. That is why it also uses the phrase 'touched' as well as passed to prevent the scenario you describe.

Under your interpretation, Lallana could stand on the penalty spot way behind Citys back line whilst Mane runs down the wing gets in front of Lallana passes it back and Lallana scores - ignoring the fact he was gaining an unfair advantage by standing in an offside position.

Whether this rule gets applied correctly is another matter but the rule is quite clear in preventing the opponent gaining an unfair advantage by standing in an offside position whilst their team mate makes progress. The player who is offside is penalised the moment he becomes active in that passage of play. This was an open and shut case in that regard, and yet google the miss, and the media will have you believe it was the miss of the season.

I remember Jonny M reffing the Villa match. We got two or even three penalties! One for the Villa left back sticking his arm out, making no contact with the ball but exciting the lino enough for him to flag Jonny who obliged. We've paid for that largesse ever since.

Sorry, that's just not how the offside law works. It's only the last pass that's relevant - if Lallana was in an onside position when the ball was played to him it doesn't matter at all where he was when a previous pass went to someone else unless he attempted to play the ball

No, that was Twattenburg, and, remember, there was no score at the time.
It was the Bottler at Everton for the rags, and he only booked Rojo for his double-footed assault on the Everton player, then took no action whatsoever when Imabignosedbitch brought his foot down in Coleman's face, whilst looking directly at it.

There seems to be a pattern emerging in the treatment of our club and other, shall we say "favoured" clubs. but it's difficult to make out what it is.

All the times the flag-happy flag waver raised his arm to indicate Sterling offside were not wholly correct. There was at least ONE occasion when Sterling sailed past Milner but he did it at such a speed that the weary, dreary lino was clearly perplexed and just raised the flag as a matter of course - knob!
