Referees' Performances | 2025/26

The ref in the women's game yesterday was the rags best player
CIty had a goal disallowed, that even the BBC commentators did not know had been chalked off ?
Only watched the first half of this entertaining game, so missed the analysis, but why was it disallowed ?

Think she claimed that there was a foul on the keeper , how she didn't give a penalty on bunny at the end of the game is even more of a mystery.

The comms quality was appalling.

The pictures showed our girls with hands on head suggesting the goal hadn't been allowed (looked nowt wrong with it to me, almost a bit of trying to keep the game 'alive'), the graphics reverted to 0-2 but the comms didn't realise what had happened for about half a minute after the restart.

It was a bit Cris Kamara only much much worse.

And to think this lady is supposedly the best in the WSL and may be in the football league next season. I have watched the game this morning and rewound the disallowed goal a few times. Apparently it was disallowed for a foul on the keeper. No one impeded or even touched the keeper. Bizarre decision.
Then there was the none penalty decision. Even more bizarre

Do professional referees still have a game assessment of their performance? Seems very little accountability nowadays.

I get it, it's a high profile role and somebody will always think you're wrong, or biased. But the general standards are getting worse and there doesn't seem to be any recognition of the facts let alone a plan to reverse it.

Mrs Howard Webb runs the female version of PiGMOL.

Nothing suspicious about her and her fella controlling both sections of the same organisation...

I don’t think they are getting worse, it’s that the game has changed so much in terms of scrutiny and how people perceive the rules should be applied. There were no halcyon days where fans weren’t calling the ref a wanker every week and instead saying you’re doing a jolly fine job…

I think we've got a perfect storm ATM with referees .
1. Intense scrutiny and a media that benefits financially from the eyes on the page that controversy produces
2. Turbocharged hatred ramped up by the media so that fewer people want to step into the ring and take the inevitable flack
3. A professional body tied closely to a lucrative league so that most fans question its integrity .
4. The introduction and the over reach of VAR with lack of consistency and the emasculating of the referee on the pitch .
5. VAR going down rabbit holes for far too long. Exhibit A . Disallowed Semenyo goal in Newcastle LC semi
6. Lack of real time transparency in VAR decisions . Exhibit B . Rashford not interfering with play in derby and Fernandez scoring .
6. Frequent rule changes so that fans are behind the curve and confused . Exhibit C . The handball rules .

There may be more factors .
