Regrouping of singers within the stadium

Didsbury Dave said:
Sorry cheadlehulmeblue. I got ranting and rambling a bit. I just think the stadium has a high roof and it doesn't help, especially as our singers are on the bottom tier. The penny dropped for me the couple of times I sat in the east stand upper tier and I was stunned at how little sound carries upwards from the singing corner, and then once I sat on the east stand lower tier and you couldn't hear the south stand even when you could see their hands clapping. When you sit, as I do every week, opposite those two sections in the Colin bell it isn't like that.

Of course it's a multi-faceted problem without a magic wand solution. And of course you are right that if everyone did stand up and sing there wouldn't be an issue.

Its alright mate, I can tell your passionate about it and like me just want things to improve, hopefully this will help to solve it.

I've got a good feeling about the new 3rd tier, and the 6000 new season ticket holders.

Most of them in the 3rd tier will probably be working class City fans that have been desperate for a season ticket for years. They will probably be a vocal bunch as well, especially being sat next to the away fans. Add a lower roof which will amplify any noise, and we should end up with a large tier that creates a decent atmosphere. The only downside being, fans who don't sing relocating from other areas of the stadium en-masse, due to the cheaper season tickets. If that happens we'll end up with another quiet tier.

i kinda agree, but aren't we already meant to have that now. We already have a singing section sat next to away fans. Ofcourse there are a number of factors that make the atmosphere poor, but i think its just about getting a hardcore of people that just constantly sing no matter what, like what palace fans have, with the dedicated block. Ideally we need one huge stand like the kop , thats not gonna happen though.

I don't think we will ever get a group constantly singing, and being honest I wouldn't really want that. I just think we need more songs to spread around the ground more often, and that's what I believe can be achieved.

A number of things, acoustics, roof, 3 tier etc all make a difference...

We mention yaris & poznan fans, another huge difference here is singing a song for longer so everybody gets singing in time and allows the song to spread.. We sing short songs and by the time they are picking up volume its either ended or another group start singing a different song. A longer song picks up momentum and gets louder. By the time the yaris and poznan fans where only half way through their songs it was extremely loud so carried well across the stadium and third tier..

Bluemoon for example, it takes two rounds of the song before the stadium picks up on it and joins in while lifting scarves, by this time the fans that started singing bluemoon have got bored and stopped singing. Scarves drop and we dont even break in to a third round of singing bluemoon. We need to let it go on 4 or 5 times like when we beat the rags 1 nil 3 years ago to go top of league. That was as loud as yaris & poznan.

You're spot on in everything you say. It's the reason why "hark now hear" always catches on: it has a huge intro with the 'my father' bit. There's also a sort of conflicting side to this: the long lasting 'clapalong' type songs dont spread . You will never heard "I've never felt more like singing the blues' boom around the stadium. You just don't. It has to be the anthem type songs, which are usually short.

That's why the songs need to spread in every direction at once, from one point only.

Exactly, "never felt more like singing the blues" / "hark now hear" / "oh when the blues go marching in" all get chance to start and pick up the volume and carry on the momentum.

Fingers crossed 115 will get it going as it should be, just takes fans participation..

Other songs: - "We love you City we do, oh City we love you", "Sheikh Mansours Blue and White Army", "We're on the march with Manuels' army, we're all going to 'Wem- ber - ley' and we'll really shake em up when we win the FA Cup, cos City are the greatest football team"

Ok so we have presented our findings to the club. Given them the numbers and where possible from which blocks they intend to move from.

Club are happy with this. We will contact everyone who expressed an interest privately to cover the next steps and any public announcements will come from the club. Most likely after barcelona.

Other than that theres nowt more to add. Thanks to everyone for their interest and ...watch this space !

I asked before but can you confirm how many people applied to the block ??

I think one thing that annoys me the most is songs being lost or not being sung anymore. We are city super city, never gets sung. We moan about having no songs, when in fact we have loads that we never sing. Im sick of hearing oh pablo zabaleta ten times during a match.

Great stuff.

As Dave has posted, well done.

Roll on next season and a proper singing section/s.

Interesting article/read.

The rise of the British Ultra.

ultrasbarrovia.jpg

Although groups resembling Ultras date back to the 1930’s in Brazil, it is generally accepted that Ultras in their modern form emerged in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s as fans from continental Europe and in particular Italy took inspiration from the passionate atmosphere created on British terraces.

This expanded into a unique fan culture, with the fans gathered in the curvas or ends, providing not just vociferous vocal backing to their side but also creating colourful displays involving flares and flags to confirm their support.

However, it appears to have somewhat come full circle as more and more British supporters take influence from a culture whose initial influence came from these shores. This can be seen explicitly through groups like Crystal Palace’s Holmesdale Fanatics and more indirectly through the amalgamation of some Ultra behaviour from greater exposure to European football culture in European competition, such as Manchester City’s adaptation of the ‘Poznan’. Equally Manchester United’s Green and Gold campaign, before the day trippers started turning up in Green and Gold jester hats, had all the hallmarks of the European Ultras’ mentality.

Indeed the first British Ultra group, the now defunct, Red Ultras Aberdeen, who were formed in 1999, stated on their website: ‘Many of the founding members drew their inspiration from the colourful supports of other countries witnessed on Scotland or Aberdeen European trips.’

aberdeen-red-ultras.jpg

However direct European influence seems to be less of a factor south of the border (the Poznan and Newcastle’s laughable attempt an Ultras movement a few years ago aside), as the majority of the English ultras groups such as the aforementioned Holmesdale Fanatics (Crystal Palace) and the Jorvik Reds (York City) support lower or non league clubs.

jorvik-reds.jpg

These fans, supporting teams who have little chance of major success on the field of play are attempting instead to be the ‘best’ off it, which is hardly a new concept in British football, although they prove this with tifos – an Italian word for the phenomenon of supporting a team, which has come to mean orchestrated displays of support with fireworks, flags, confetti etc – rather than by taking an end or having the best pair of trainers.

Tony White of Middlesbrough’s Red Faction believes: ‘It is a fundamental way of thinking, to uphold the culture and tradition of our home, to show our pride and passion for the history of our region, to sing and celebrate Middlesbrough FC, the flagship of our proud town.’

middlesbrough-red-faction.jpg

Critics and sceptics would argue that these groups have bastardised somebody else’s culture and lack any true culture of their own, that it is alien to our own football culture and the occasional spontaneous genius of the English football crowd.

However with the authorities doing their utmost to repress fan culture in this country with overzealous policing, draconian stewarding and ridiculous kick off times designed to suit the armchair fan, at least they are taking a stand. Their attempt to reclaim fan culture is admirable and indeed the ultra mentality is in essence still an extension of the British fan culture that inspired it.

And yet it still feels forced. Having seen Fenerbahçe fans at the Şükrü Saracoğlu, Roma at the Stadio Olympico and Olympiakos’ Gate 7 Ultras at the Karaiskakis, a trip to Selhurst Park doesn’t feel the same. Whilst the Holmesdale Fanatics undoubtedly have good intentions and some of the banners and mosiacs they have created are indeed impressive, the noise in the ground and their new ‘We support the Palace’ song still feels like an attempt to create an atmosphere rather than an atmosphere itself.

holmesdale-fanatics.jpg

Our supporters can definitely learn things from these Ultras, their unwavering support, atmosphere and colour is all sadly lacking from our sanitised modern game, equally many aspects of British football fandom remain unique and we should be proud of them. Thus if the ultra mentality is to truly influence our football culture, it’s ideals should be interpolated into rather than replace what is already there, culture needs to remain organic not forced.

Anyone else just get the email? Exciting times :-)

On Tuesday 27th January representatives from the 1894 Group and the Manchester City OSC met with MCFC Club officials to present our findings in terms of demand levels for a new extended singing area in blocks 115 & 114.
Due to the large volume of demand our initiative now has the full backing of the Club. We see this as a major first step in really changing the noise dynamics of the stadium.
We have now been instructed to get 100% firm commitment and details from all those that contacted us expressing interest, to enable the bulk relocation process to take place.
We will then set the block out keeping groups/families together and submit the list to the Club to enable the MCFC ticket office to process the relocation. Official confirmations will then be sent out direct from the MCFC ticket office.
We have had interest from groups of up to 21 people. Groups of this size, rather than being placed in a line on one row, will probably be split into 3 groups of 7 and placed in front of each other over 3 rows, which we believe is a better configuration.
Under instruction from MCFC, we will be giving people 3 options in terms of where they would like their new seats to be located. These are :
1. Front Third of Blocks
2. Middle Third of Blocks
3. Rear Third of Blocks
What do we need now?
• The name of each person in your group
• The Season Card Number of each person in your group
• Email address details of each person in you group or a single contact email address for the ‘Lead name’.
• Preference in terms of area of block (listed above) you would like to be situated in.
• Whether you would accept a different area if you first choice area is not available
What are the time frames involved?
• We need all details by Midnight 20th February
• List will be compiled and presented to MCFC 26th February
• Move will be carried out by MCFC ticket office (date to be confirmed via email following meeting on 26th February)
Please find attached a form to fill in and return via email to provide these details. If you are struggling opening and using this form please provide ALL the required information on a return email

Yeh, recieved this today and i think its brilliant the club have decided to give them the full backing. I will be sending my email back with the form attached ASAP to ensure they get the numbers they want! MCFC OK

Well done 1894 group for getting this organised and well done to those at the club for listening and acting on the request.

Exciting times and great effort
I would be well into this any other time but as of next year my son will have his own season ticket with me and is probably a bit young to be involved
but the season I feel he's old enough I'll be doing my all to get relocated
good luck and well done the 1894 group

im in a bit of a dilema , im on the waiting list for the cheap seats with my kids as i was going to give up my card due to the price but if i can get the cheap seats then im good for another few years (if the price stays the same) but i wanted to move to the singing section but city wont give me price of kids tickets to see if there is a big price difference

just thought i'd jump in here after watching a few Dortmund clips on Youtube, 'me' i think city should go for the one end and pack it with cheap season tickets, no second or third tier just one very large end which would be the north stand, and leave the away fans where they are, its not to late to change plans although it may delay it a season but it could be done

<a class="postlink" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNtuW0NOw-M" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNtuW0NOw-M</a>

we could have this by charging the right price and proper marketing, there is no need for away fans to add to ground atmosphere when we could do it

Would love to move with my 15yo son but the price difference between North and South stands stops me :(

i didnt even have a sound on but just the sight of that stand is just simply stunning. wish we had one big stand like that instead of 3 tiers.

We can announce the numbers once everyone who pledged they were going to move by email have responded to the latest email with their full details ie seasoncard number and they have been absolutely qualified as an existing seasoncard holder. (This is important as you will only be able to relocate during a certain window after people affected by the level 2 corporate stuff have had a chance to pick a new seat)

Once we have qualified everyone who said they will move we can then announce it. We have given people until newcastle at home to confirm everything.
