Religion

I think agnosticism is the only sensible position really.we’ll never know if there is a sky fairy or not.

With that said, you’ve actually just quoted the bad bits of the Jewish part of the Bible and used it to criticise Christanity, which is found in the New Testament.

The Bible is many books comprised over 1000s of years, all written by people who didn’t know better. That’s the best way to view it.
We do know for certain that there is no sky fairy as interpreted by these books because there are certain facts we know about that the Bible is incorrect on; the origin and age of the Earth, the creation of life, 'historic' events that never actually transpired as presented by the Bible.

Continuing to preach these lies and having people act upon them is harming society and progress. I and many others would have no issue with those who have faith in the Abrahemic God IF that was all it was, but for many it isn't. 'God's Law' supercedes Statutory Law, science is an afront to the teachings of God given to us by this same book. It's harmful now, to others and especially those who do not share the same beliefs.

If we were here discussing ALL the "bad bits" of the Bible we'd easily surpass 1000 pages. The Bible doesn't make sense, it is outdated in it's understandings, it's 'morals' no longer apply with modern society. You cannot ignore the bad stuff by highlighting only the good, that is not the way the Bible is intended to be followed. ALL of it must be obeyed or you run the risk of offending God.

If faith gives you comfort and guides you to treating others respectfully and in a better manner, i'm all for that, but if your faith instructs you to judge others of a different belief, or has you questioning and demeaning others for not sharing your beliefs, that is where the problem lies.

We don’t know how life was “created” just to point out.

I am not making a claim that the major religions have it right, I’m pointing out what the Bible actually is.

It’s not one book, it’s many books, written by dozens and dozens of people.

The difference in time from the first few books written to the last, is like comparing what I’ve written to William the Conqueror, that’s how big a gap it is, actually a longer time period.

If a person wishes to critique Christianity, they need to actually take extracts from the Gospels and Pauline Epistles.

Again, not making a case for it but parts of the Gospels do hold a lot of morality, some parts have major question marks over... such as why those who don’t believe but live moral lives go to hell for eternity.

The previous poster quoted people being put to death for adultery from the Torah but in the Gospels Jesus stopped that from happening to someone.

Unfortunately in my younger years I was made to read it cover to cover :-(

Simple. All (and I do mean all) religion is b****cks and they were all invented to control people.

That's not to say that many people NEED to believe there is some higher power, but the above is still true.

People can separate faith from religion, religion is made up and faith is a belief that there is "Something else", whatever that "Something else" is can be debated.

Asking a question about where we come from and how we came to be isn't in any book written at this moment in time, we don't have to fill in the gaps with words written eons ago who threw rocks at the moon and believed in flying horses and chariots of bloody fire.

Is that agreed upon by all Christians? I don't think it is, is it! There's the root of the problem, right there. Christianity has so many disagreements amongst itself, how do any expect it to work with those of other belief systems, Hindus, Jews, Pagans, Atheists etc. What is the standard for all Christians? There isn't one any more, so they select certain absolutes that must be adhered to; Creationism is fact, God is Love, Sinners punished.

Here's a few more for you, specifically on the concept of "non-believers" and their "fate".

Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? - Corinthians 6:14

Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, for whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works.
- John 1:9-11

And they entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and with all their soul, but that whoever would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, should be put to death, whether young or old, man or woman. - Chronicles 15:12-13

But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me. - Luke 19:27

Such a beautiful message, eh?

As I and others have stated, you can believe this shit if you want... in private. It no longer has any basis or bearing on the progress or direction of wider society anymore.

The bible version 2.0 also has serious amounts of violence and murder.
Admittedly only about 1/5 of version 1.0, but still a lot

I’ll take one example from that list, which again is mostly Torah but this is from Matthew:

“Jesus recommends that to avoid sin we cut off our hands and pluck out our eyes. This advice is given immediately after he says that anyone who looks with lust at any women commits adultery. 5:29-30

If the author of the article thinks this is to be taken literally, he has no business in biblical scholarship.

In fact that’s a running theme of misunderstandings he has for Matthew. He thinks everything is literal, rather than metaphorical.

Ok so, again, you’ve included a quote from the Hebrew Bible Chronicles and thrown it in with the New Testament.

You’ll notice the Hewbrew Bible quotes are far more violent than the Gospels in their instruction.

Luke chapter 19 is Jesus telling a story of a master and his servants, that is NOT direct instruction, he is quoting the master in the metaphorical story he’s telling.

It really helps if you read and understand the scriptures in full, rather than taking the odd sentence that sounds worse than it is.

The rest of your post I agree with, many Christians scare the shit out of me and should keep it to themselves.
