Religion

"Let's say that the consensus is that our species, being the higher primates, Homo Sapiens, has been on the planet for at least 100,000 years, maybe more. Francis Collins says maybe 100,000. Richard Dawkins thinks maybe a quarter-of-a-million. I'll take 100,000. In order to be a Christian, you have to believe that for 98,000 years, our species suffered and died, most of its children dying in childbirth, most other people having a life expectancy of about 25 years, dying of their teeth. Famine, struggle, bitterness, war, suffering, misery, all of that for 98,000 years.

Heaven watches this with complete indifference. And then 2000 years ago, thinks 'That's enough of that. It's time to intervene,' and the best way to do this would be by condemning someone to a human sacrifice somewhere in the less literate parts of the Middle East. Don't lets appeal to the Chinese, for example, where people can read and study evidence and have a civilization. Let's go to the desert and have another revelation there. This is nonsense. It can't be believed by a thinking person"

CHRISTOPHER HITCHENS.
Yeah, but Christopher was forgetting the time honoured religious cop out;

'God moves in mysterious ways'

It's a cracking catch-all that trumps everything

Anything that can be thrown at one religion vis a vis intolerance, bigotry, backwards thinking etc can just as easily be thrown at the other two. The problem lies more with a person's interpretation of the religion than anything else. If Europe is more forward thinking than the Middle East it's because we ignore the churches and act according to our (modern day) consciences, rather than any flaw in a particular religion.

Saying all religions are the same, even if they have lots of similarities, is the easiest thing in the world to do but ultimately, it’s a cop out. Some are more immoral than others. Islam is more immoral than Christianity and Christianity is more immoral than Buddhism.

That's a load of bollocks tbh mate, interpret Christianity strictly and it's no more moral than any other religion, it's proven that throughout its 2000 year history right up to the present day.
We've also had Buddhists interpreting their religion as grounds to carry out genocide on the Rohynga Muslim population in Myanmar just inside the last 12 months.

People of all religions and none, including Buddhists in Myanmar and atheists in Russia have done terrible things. The question is what can be reasonably attributed to a religion or lack of religion. In other words, what does your religion say you need to do in order to achieve eternal life. If some religions (Buddhism) say not to harm any living thing then I would say that’s a better religion than one that says you have to burn people alive or chop people’s heads off in order to go to heaven, would you not agree?

You know fuck all about Buddhism if you think that's the central tenet.

Religions that tell you to burn and decapitate non believers like Christianity?

Strawman there. No-one said central tenet but there’s plenty of scripture for it, no? And no one mentioned Christianity or any other religion so do you want to have a go at answering the question?

Buddhism is about finding spiritual freedom by letting go of all ties to the material world, not just possessions, but to family, friends and society and the responsibilities associated with the ties to those, with no care for the harm that does.
It's the most self centred and least responsible, emphatic and caring of all the major religions.

But is that not better than religions that advocate violence towards others?
