He certainly wasn't the sharpest tool in the box, and it was his first time of going there .... needless to say it was his last time too!

He wants us to win(he favored City or he had a bet)
There are just very subtle tones you can pick up and how he delivers the details....
All ever so slightly...Citys way...
Can any one pick it out..

I think it was one of Coleman's last football commentaries. He didn't do the final that year for the BBC. Motson did.

One of the great classic away games. The replay at Maine Rd was good as well. And how did we sell 52k tickets in a couple of days or was it pay at the gate?

It was all ticket for the replay. The tickets were sold at the turnstiles in the days before the match, I remember buying mine by queueing up outside the Kippax.

In answer to the OP; would it really be the sort of game that you'd remember on it's anniversary? Various Wembley trips; yes. The 6-1; yes. The 5-1s (both of them); yes. Istanbul; yes. The Bradford promotion game? Yes. Even the 10-1, though that's now been equalled! Not sure the Everton game ranks as highly in our collective memory. Don't get me wrong; they were epic games. Maine Road was about as rammed as I'd seen it for the replay. I was in my usual seat (North Stand, block P, seventh row). From memory, all around me was Everton fans. But they were okay, no hassle with them. Though I believe it got spicy behind the Kippax after the game.

Plenty of us remember that game at Goodison for all the wrong reasons … personally I’ll never forget it after what happened outside .

It's always annoyed me that over all these years,there has has only ever been to my knowledge
Very short tv highlights footage...of both games.
Now the 1st encounter was a full on quarter final between two big teams,an amazing match,with lots going on and off the park.....It was a really exciting attacking team....and there just seems to be no other footage
If that had been utd.,.
Especially as ...the camera s were out for the " City" video documentary.....John Bond and Big Mal
But that City doc...didn't show the any of the cup ties City played that season.

Atmosphere was unbelievable that night, we were packed into the Kippax like sardines.

52 thousand.Kippax rammed.i wasn't there...but Mick Chapman who runs the Chesterfield supporters branch...that was his first game...the replay
I was always obsessed with that away game because it was John Bond
who got us going on a bounce,away at Everton, City were bouncing in them days
Very exciting time to be a Blue.

@ beehivebob reckons Paul Powers goal " is one of the very few from that era that he can remember"

And for my own part ,it was one of the most thrilling games I've ever listened to by transistor radio ,having not been at the match...il never forget that moment of Paul Power's last min goal at goodison,the excitement ,the joy,the elation,as described in my OP.up there with Powers goal in Milan and his semi final free kick winner at Villa Park..you don't seem to get excited by anything,I bet your fun at parties,always going on about how u got kicked to fuck at Leeds...something you ll never forget and u wont let the rest of us either

The goodison quarter final was also ,by all accounts one of the most violent games ever in our history ....

Yeah, definitely different times to today .... I don't think I missed a game back then, around eight of us in our 'little gang' used to travel all over the country by train or coach watching City .... so many cherished memories, even though the hooligans everywhere did their level best to spoil it all.

The ever present spectre of 'trouble' did add a certain frisson to many a mundane away trip though.

My memory is vague but I do recall it was often the smaller grounds that delivered the most mither, it certainly seemed to me that you were far more likely to get a clump at Oakwell than at White Hart Lane?

And, let's be honest, it was usually very straightforward to avoid the dancing all together if you really wanted to, with the exception of a cowardly ambush...I'm looking at you Southampton, 'Boro, Coventry City.

I remember it like it was 5 not 45 years ago :-).

What a time to be alive, early 20s, no responsibilities, City playing brilliantly under Jon Bond, fabulous FA Cup run ( replay result still hacks me off). I loved PP back then.

I even went to OT for a laugh with a few mates to watch them lose iirc.

I loved 1981. Nowt but good memories ( apart from ruddy Spurs, that's never changed).

I didn't miss a game that season, so was at every cup match. The Everton replay was a wild night. We got back to Blackpool and went to the Adam and Eve Nightclub, it was as dead as a dodo but the perfect place to get happily drunk in.

The Ipswich semi final was the last game I went to with my brother before he emigrated. We were stood next to each other when PP scored, I didn't see him again until we got back to the car.

I'm pretty sure that Paul Power's sister ran The Metropole Hotel in Blackpool, the only hotel on the sea side of the promenade. It was a terrible place, but it did have a decent bar and a full-size snooker table.

I've just watched it again and thought exactly the same. Like the polar opposite of these days. Was it Moore on comms or David Coleman?
