It is not at ease with which I type this because I absolutely love him as a player for this club and when I have met him he has seemed a total gentleman. He has also played his part in many memorable victories including all Derby Day ones where Richards and him have been brilliant, the first win over Jose Mourinho's Chelsea (1-0 Anelka penalty) and so many more.

But alas there is no room for sentiment in football. I personally feel that his time as Manchester City captain is over and that Vincent Kompany and Stevie Ireland should be given this role, they can sort out who is captain and who is vice captain amongst themselves for my liking. Now here is the debate. At 29 years of age would he be willing to stay for another year and reach his testimonial of which I believe his deserving and be a squad player? or will he feel at this moment in time given that we are likely to purchase one or more centre halves that the time has come to move on?

Believe me these thoughts have been running through my mind and I have long debated with myself about it but I am going to make the rather bold statement that he is not good enough in terms of ability for where we wish to head as a club. He has been brilliant for us for the circumstances we were in at the time and now we have money to purchase a centre half of superior talent, we must do so. He has been too error prone in my opinion.

Shay and Stevie will be gutted to see him go if he does choose to leave rather than remain a squad player, as will I partially but if he does then I will be quietly more confident that we are moving in the right direction and progressing as a football club on and off the pitch. I'm gutted to post this thread really because I don't like the idea of such a long serving player and fan favourite leaving the club and I expect views to be 50/50.

Come on, help me out here. Over to you ladies and gents.

i agree. top bloke but hes not quite good enough for want we want next year and i feel he should move on

Stevie for captain, used to like him. But just ran out of patience with him, he can have a world class performance one week and then completely lose it for the next 4 games. I still blame him for the UEFA cup exit. Well done for everything hes done and that but times up Dunney.

Agree but would like him to stay at the club as a squad player as he still has some quality, last half of the season he performed okay!

I think right now he's playing at as high a level of football as he can. If we want to go higher, he would become a serious weak-link in the team and as a result be even more vilified by a section of the fans than he seems to have become already. I'd like him to stick around in the squad but if he wants to leave to keep playing regularly i won't blame him.

I've said this before but hes unlucky he plays in such a high risk area, if he played DM and could pass he'd be absolutely brilliant.

Have to agree with you on this and now go on to the next centre half. Its never easy saying goodbye to players who have served us well, only wish the ones who havnt would take the hint.No sentiment in football and i think we should all remember that.Oh,by the way,not him from Fulham!

It's hard to say 'time's up' to someone - especially a loyal servant like Dunne. But if we're going to be battling with Europe's elite for silverware then sadly, the big fellow just isn't up to the job anymore and has to go.

As has been said before, no room for sentiments in football.

Excellant post and I wholeheartedly agree with you. Thereis no room for sentiment in sport and Dunny should move on to a bottom half club where he will do a sterling job for them. And he wont exactly be a pauper, will he?

I think Dunne would be a great bench player. He knows the prem and many of the offensive opponents. He can help out the young defenders and give a solid performance as a substitute, if needed. While I agree that he is not world class, and we need that level of player, I would be very sad to see him kicked to the curb after all he has done for us. Also, if need be, he can be our brute squad ;)
