there were just too many own goals and red cards
THIS ^^^^^^
Errrrrr not THIS ^^^^^^

Is this really your overriding balanced opinion of his 9 years at city?

If so you're very quick to forget.
I don't think either of those two were seriously suggesting that the OGs and red cards were regular occurrences during Dunney's period at the club. Unfortunately however; that least full season that he was with us turned out to be a poor season for him, which is a real shame as I hated seeing a man who was fantastic for us for many seasons struggling with form and confidence. For whatever reason he was a shadow of his former self. That UEFA cup game (was it Hamburg?) when he got sent off; just about everybody in the ground or watching it on TV could see it coming as the game progressed (just like Mario at Arsenal). Yes; I know that was only one game, but it was a reflection on that season. We have made giant strides forward since he left us and, even at his peak, I wouldn't trade either of our first choice CBs for him. But I like to remember the great performances he put in for us. Thanks Dunney.

After watching the last three games of last season I would take Dunnie over quite a few of the squad, he played for the club and the team. Their pathetic performances were a complete contrast to everything Dunnie did, he might have 'scored' a few own goals but at least he wasn't doing it on purpose and was earning his pay not sitting back and taking money for nothing!!

Also, even after the less than gentlemanly treatment he received from the club when he left I can't remember him saying a bad word about Manchester City.

As you may have surmised I have still, even after a short holiday, not got over my disappointment with our players at the end of season!! :-)

Dunne was involved in our most pathetic game in about 10 years

Oh, I hadn't realised that he played on 11th May 2013 in the FA Cup Final or are you referring to the final match of the season on 19th May 2013? He didn't play in that one either. :-)

:0 you know the game I mean

A moderately wealthy mans titus bramble. Waaaay overrated by a large chunk of City fans. I used to have to argue with people on here that he wasn't as good as Kompany FFS!

I woulda given SWP one of those POTY awards, Barton another and Distin the last one which may even have convinced him to stay and he coulda been useful to us over the years, but the fawning over Dunney was just too much for most fans to see any further than him. Some astounding displays from the guy that made you proud, but guranteed to drop a clanger almost every game and was no use to us once our ambition stretched further than avoiding relegation

I know, but I still love Dunnie, in the nicest possible way of course. :-) ;-)

The disallowed goal from the freekick he took. I have never seen a ball hit harder than that. How the net withstood it I'll never know.

Dunne's own goals often stemmed from the fact he was trying to stretch a scoop away certain goals. He gave his all.

The red cards were again, him giving his all, not dirty and rearly slow. Kompany's spirit is in the same vein.

Dunney was, and will always remain a class City Legend - that many Player of The Season (4), MOTM awards, and that much commitment from 2000-2009 is rarely seen at Premier league levels. He played numerous times whilst injured. He carried on if his boots fell off. He wore the Captain's band looked unchallenged for that role for a long time.

He cost us £3 million. Absoulte snip compared to Charvet, Distin and Howey. He was a big step up from the superb players Edghill and Morrison. Has there been a better defender for Eire?

Garry Cook really angered me when he said, " Richard Dunne doesn’t roll off the tongue in Beijing." It made me feel like City don't need grafters and battlers any more.

I'd have him back in a shot to play a supportive role to our squad and if the lad wants to coach, City should make for a venue of choice.

I thought Dunne would be the first player in my lifetime to reach and deserve a Testimonial for a decade of footy at City. Shame. He deserved that.

Mr Acton28, if I ever meet up with you I will buy you a pint. I couldn't have put it better myself. You have said most of the things I still feel about Dunnie, I would have him back tomorrow like a shot, he earned his legend role and apart from Zab, Vinnie, Hart and Micah the present squad have to work a lot harder to get even halfway to the regard I have for the Dunnie Monster. :-)

Richard dunne was a legend at city and people with short memories need to look back he have his all for city and wat he did at the stry he made up with in performances. He should of got a testimonial at city how he didn't I don't know..

Fat el hombre is the only poster I've seen in this thread actually post a footballing perspective on it and to sum it up

Fighting relegation = great

As soon as we were looking to move up on our targets his red cards / own goals and mistakes were costing us and he was found out and that's not an opinion it's a fact.

What's also a fact is that city fans should never forget what went on before though and his role keeping city in the premier league for quite a few years in a row.

I'll never forget the OG he got for Newcastle, it was the best OG I've ever seen.

He also stuck one in for City in a game that ended o o against Newcastle ( unusual I know) and that tit Graham Poll disallowed it for some unknown reason that no one could actually see! Thought he was great for City at the time. Tough as old boots he was.

It was a Samaras header that got disallowed - I can only remember that one 0-0 at home pretty sure that was it.

My only issue with Dunney was his hoofs forward. Other than that he was one of the most important players in our recent history IMO. It's not all about goals or mazy runs. He was their when we truly needed him. He is a legend and I wish him nothing but the best of luck.

Great servant to the club and will always be respected. However, it was evident when we signed Kolo that we had upgraded and that he could play the ball.
In terms of what both players did for the club, Dunne wins hands down....but it is about the context of where the club is at the time.

We got our moneys worth out of Dunne. Different teams over the years but he always gave his all when playing for us. You think of the players who has played beside Dunne in our squad at the moment and Dunne had a good partnership with Kompany and Richards during his spell at the club and both players learned a lot from Dunne. He was a leader on the pitch not vocal but lead the team in his way while captain. I hope he gets a new club. To be honest he could well still get a game for some of the teams in the league and would be a good addition to most bottom half teams squads. A city legend yes for the time he was at the club. Like Goater for me Goater got the goals while Dunne done the ugly work in defence. 1 is a legend while the other should be too.
