Rio Olympics

OG Of the tournament just been scored by Zimbabwe.

Absolute peach of a header.

Looks like the IOC have borrowed a commodore amiga for this years Olympic TV graphics too with a music soundtrack to match.

I cant think of any Olympics in my 52, years that I have been so underwhelmed about, it does not appear to have been promoted at all, I was genuinely surprised when I realised it was the opening ceremony this Friday.

Me too. I think it's a combination of the general stench of corruption around world sports bodies like the IOC and FIFA, drug-taking, the increasing commercialisation of the games, the inclusion of professional sports and contestants that just don't belong there.

It's not been promoted?! Where have you been?

Both BBC and Channel 4 have been running promotional trails for the last couple of weeks.

There has been a whole series of documentaries on the BBC about some of the medalists from the last Olympics, including the rowers, cyclists and athletes. There's another on prime time BBC 1 tonight about Mo Farah: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b07mzr7j

There was a feature length documentary about the 2012 opening ceremony last week and Five Live have been broadcasting live from Rio all day for the last week!

Not really interested in it. Been tainted by drugs etc.

Yep.

They are planning to drown out the expected booing of Brazilian officials with loud music. The people didn't want it due to the precarious economy but got it anyway with some of the speakers allegedly given bungs.

Might be pleasantly surprised until I see Justin Gatling with muscle bulges completely at odds with normal human anatomy warming up in 100 metres.

Same could be said of the London Olympics. Plenty of people didn't want those games either. It's nothing new.

Yep.

I was one of them. Still not sure what legacy it has. The desperation to get the Olympic stadium used on a regular basis led to West Ham getting the steal of the century. In that respect I don't blame them for taking it.

The legacy is that a huge, toxic, semi-derelict, industrial wasteland in the east end of London which was contributing next to nothing to the economy, has been transformed into a place where people now live, work, study and play.

Plans have just been unveiled for the V&A and Sadlers Wells to open venues in the Olympic Park. UCL are building a new campus there and new homes, schools and businesses are being built on the rest. Not to mention the world class swimming and cycling venues which are used all year round by both local schools and the general public.

The stadium could and should have been better planned but West Ham only have exclusive access for half the year for which they're paying rent and the taxpayer, via the stadium operators, gets a cut of everything else from the naming rights to hiring the stadium out for concerts, etc.

Feel exactly the same way. The IOC make FIFA look like a bunch of naughty schoolboys when it comes to corruption. It's just a big smorgasbord for fat cats.

I think the only legacy from 2012 was Seb Coe getting Life time achievement award from the BBC.

My interest in athletics, swimming (synchronised or otherwise), gymnastics, rifle shooting and all other olympic sports remains at zero during and between the games.

These beg to differ.

West Ham pay fuck all in comparison to other London organisations in rent:
www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2016/04/14/olympic-bosses-reveal-west-ham-stadium-deal---including-25m-annu/

It was a vanity project for bent Seb,Blair, Boris and Cameron. And West Ham gained from it, so good business sense from them.

There's always one sport I wouldn't usually be arsed about which will catch my eye at stupid o'clock and then stick with.
