It's gone beyond politics now, but for those who insist it still is, do you not think it's due to systematic failures of this government, and the previous?

No, it is about human greed and opportunitism.

Despite some posters best attempts this has got fuck all to do with race or politics.

Of course it's got something to do with politics. It's not just coincidence that riots tend to happen in times of recession and begin in the poorer parts of whatever City they're in. Tottenham, Toxeth, Moss Side...etc.

In that case every movement you make is down to politics. There is making long thin connections and there are clear and direct links.

This at best is the former. It's a bunch of thugs who used a demonstration as a veil for violence and robbery.

Yeah its just a few dickhead kids.... nothin political..

2254: Claire Marshall BBC News, Birmingham - We've seen the most extraordinary scenes. Walking through the streets, I saw 100 or so men with ski masks and hoods pulled down. They seemed to be very well-organised, communicating with each other on radio. The police were in force but they did not seem to know what to do. It's a really tense atmosphere here.

Most if not all governments are failures but the past thirty years have been very bad for the social conditions of this country. Before Maggie was elected one million was seen as astronomically high unemployment, now it would be seen as very very low unemployment - and not just here either, that should be made very clear. This is a trend in most western countries. What does that lack of responsibility which comes from having a job and earning legitimately for a family do to a country over thirty years where it comes to the point where several generations of a family have never worked. Jeremy Kyle and this I would venture. Global capital is responsible and successive governments of both stripes are responsible, but make no mistake, these riots are in part or wholly fuelled by that sad situation.
