RIP Terry Hall

Very sad news, a really talented musician and like many I spent a lot of time in the 80's listening to the Specials.

RIP Terry

Absolutely loved The Specials when I was growing up and there's no doubt that Terry was a very talented musician.

Not wanting to derail the thread Tim but it has to be said that Terry brought some of that shit on himself at times. I saw The Specials at V Festival in 2009 and was shocked to hear him have a cheap dig at the Leeds fans who got stabbed to death in Istanbul - "Leeds fans - do one. Galatasaray fans - you lot are ok and can stay". Even Neville Staple pulled him up on it - "What the fuck's that about?" Thankfully, Terry shut up after that and got on with doing what he did best.
I think he was in with some of the Man U loons at one time. He suffered a fair amount of depression but goading rival fans is inviting trouble.

For balance, The Specials contributed to diminishing racial hatred by example.

The ghostly flute and organ, the warning brass, and the mournful bass, Ghost Town remains an incredible piece of music. It sounds different today, almost cartoonish, but when you heard those opening bars in 1981, they had a sinister air of menace. RIP.
Agreed mate (although I’d say GT was a timeless classic) , not saying I was ever some Specials/FB3 etc fan but they did some truly great stuff, sad to hear about Terry and can I stand why it’s gutted a lot of people.

I always forgave him the rag bit
Hmmm... Went to see Colourfield in the 80's. Hall came on stage accompanied by the strains of 'Glory, Glory Man United' which was met by deafening boos. He then sulked through a 40 minute set without uttering a word to the audience. As already said though, aside from the rag nonsense, his musical legacy is undeniable. Ghost Town absolutely nailed the feelings of isolation felt by ordinary people during the Thatcher years. To Terry's credit, his political convictions never wavered.

Agree that it is timeless and a really clever piece of music when you listen to its components. It was recorded in the early days of April 1981, so it was actually more influenced by the riots of 1980, yet within hours of its recording there were riots again in Brixton and then elsewhere. That whole summer the country felt like a powder keg, punctuated with ‘good old days’ moments like the Ashes and royal wedding. Surreal.
