I didn't watch City until after Tony Book had retired as a player. However, I remember him well from my youth, as he was the first City manager of my time as a fan, and a good one as well. For a long time, I didn't think I'd see another one who'd bring a major trophy to the club, though thankfully that didn't turn out to be the case.
To skipper the side to the full set of domestic trophies plus a European one was an incredible achievement on his part considering that he played at semi-pro level until he was nearly 30. And he was a proper, legendary servant of our club given the stints he put in on the coaching side for years after he ceased to run the first-team. He deserves a special mention for his role in bringing through the 1986 Youth Cup winners, a group of players I really loved.
I met him as a kid when he presented some awards at a school event attended by my old man and to which he took me along. I pleased to report that Tony was a true gentleman as well as being a proper club legend, though I'm sure that news will surprise no one.
RIP, Skip. One of our very greatest of all.
