Rishi Sunak

This was the post - not perhaps from a Tory - that started it.

I'm cynical enough to think Johnson saw support for Ukraine as a proxy Falklands, rather than a moral duty, but the echo chamber here isn't about to let suppprt for a foreign war distract from the domestic business in hand.
Johnston is just wanting to ape his man crush Churchill so I tend to agree with the Falkland bit. Lucky for Ukrainians he’s gone as we know how Winston ultimately abandoned his Eastern Euro allies in favour of the Russians.

Funny how all those wanting to have a dig about UK support for Ukraine don’t do it in the Ukraine thread, hoping they can get their cheap shots in here where no one will notice them.
You do realise it’s possible to fully support the government’s backing of Ukraine whilst questioning the motivation? The Ukraine thread is not on the political forum and would not be the right place to discuss that aspect. If you actually believe personal self interest has not played a part in both Johnson’s and Sunak’s motivation to help Ukraine then you’re deluding yourself. Both of them have put themselves and their backers ahead of what’s best for Britain in everything else. It’s just that this time the UK’s national interest for once coincides with their own self interest, and that’s to provide the level of support to Ukraine that we’re doing.

The Prime Miniature knows what he is doing.

Backing Ukraine is in the interests of the UK and the west. Else we would not be doing it.

Is every country’s leaders supporting Ukraine doing so out of self interest? When Starmer continues to support Ukraine he’s also acting in his self interest? Or is it just the tories?

If Johnson supported anyone or anything you could guarantee that he saw some political or personal advantage for himself. Everything he said and did was all about himself and his giant ego. The chance to be photographed standing beside a war leader was irresistible for this grotesque self-publicist.
Wee Rishi, on the other hand has a different motive.
A desperately failing government led by a desperately failing PM loves nothing more than a common enemy- something to unite public opinion behind them.
They tried it with Corbyn, the EU, nurses, teachers, junior doctors, railway workers - even barristers. All labelled as enemies of the people by the Tory client media.
Sadly for them , a strategy that failed because most people actually sympathised with these cases, and instead of uniting public opinion, actually created more division.
So we are left with the Russian bear.
This is a bit uncomfortable for Rishi and the tories because of the large amounts of Moscow money donated to the party and many of its individuals and campaigns to the point where we have the son of a KGB agent in the Lords, not to mention the very lucrative business done in Russia by the lovely mrs sunak which is , allegedly, still going on.
But don’t worry, our freedoms, liberties and western values are being defended against this menace by a man whose government is arresting, criminalising and imprisoning peaceful protesters and painting out children’s cartoon characters for political reasons.

Certain posters also seem to forget the 4% of GDP spent on energy support packages since the beginning of the war, with the UK’s schemes being among the most generous delivered across the whole of Europe.

I suppose this is another example of cynical self-interest at play.

Some people really do embarrass themselves on here.

I’ve already said backing Ukraine is in the UK’s interest and is the right thing to do.

However I’m questioning Johnson’s and Sunak’s motivation for it, not because they’re Tories but because they’ve done so many other things against the country’s best interest just to give themselves a headline or a catchphrase they can use to retain power.

Up until Johnson took over as PM, I believe every previous PM, including Cameron and May, were acting in what they thought was the nation’s interest. They made big mistakes but that’s another issue. However with Johnson it all changed to being all about him. Why would his motivation be to act in the country’s best interest on Ukraine when he acted in his own best interest on everything else? We’re just lucky that in this case the national interest coincided with his own interest.

You need to ask yourself why we were in the position that the government needed to provide so much support to energy prices. It wasn’t because they wanted to, it’s because prices went up more than anywhere else to a totally unsustainable level that would have crashed the economy if they did nothing. We should have been in a better position than most countries due to the availability of domestic gas but the government decided that the windfall profits of the wholesale suppliers was more important to retain.

Some people just embarrass themselves with their lack of insight and slavish support of the Tories however corrupt or pathetic their leaders are.

Especially those supporting the current Government

I didn’t need it, why was I given it?
