It really is apples and oranges to compare UK high speed with Spain (or France for that matter). Those countries are vast and empty. Building lines is relatively easy as there is space to do so.

The distances are further too, so there's greater saving in time.
Paris-Marseille is 400 miles - that's London to about Dundee. You couldn't build HS2 track that long that if you wanted to in the UK.
