Robbie to Barca done deal apparently ??

I don't think that "history" has much of a pull for most players.

They look at the here and now. What can I earn? What can I win? Where will I live? Who will I play for and with?

I think they are the things they will look at well before a club's history.

If history was that important Liverpool would get all the big players. They don't.

I don't doubt for some it can be a factor but I don't think it's that big a deal.

This is why I have said the big players throughout the day though Dave. I believe Torres to be one of the top 3/5 in the world as a striker. I don't believe we could ever get him because he went to Livepool supposedly as a 'fan', but I think that is one of those transfers which is history-attracted. Likewise with Messi at barca. I don't thin khe will ever leave, ever, because he doesn't need to as he is at the best already. There are players who will move, top players I mean, but I think the biggest of the big, (Tranny going to Madrid as another example), go to those clubs rich in heritage and history, the clubs players dream of playing for and whilst most of us have had wet dreams about playing at Maine Road, I can't really think Messi, Torres, Tranny ever woke up in the morning, soaked with duff at their dream of playing for Man City. That is what I mean.

It probably isn't a big deal, but if you have two identical offers on the table then it could swing it and that could be pivitol in big name signings. I'm probably placing too much significant on it. But say you want to sign the best brazilian and it is between say Barca and Chelsea - the offers are the same. Barca would surely say look at Romario, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho etc who made their name here (and as long as their name begins with R they will sign). It could hold some sway. Then there is the dutch link as well.

How many times do you hear "it was an opportunity i couldnt turn down! when it comes to one of these elite clubs. Spurs didnt have to sell Berbatov for example but he forced his way and there are other examples i can't think off.

At the end of the day if Barca were to come in for Ireland and he wanted to go most of us would say fair enough, you can't really begrudge him that as it is a step up, hopefully in my lifetime it will be seen more of a sidewards step.

Good point actually, Torres has come out and said that he would have only ever left Athletico to go to Liverpool. Obviously Liverpool were in a decent shape and had the spanish influence there but his allegiance to Liverpool is based on, I would guess, their sucess in the early 80's.

I suppose we're all kind of saying the same thing.

I don't doubt for a moment that Ireland would got to Barca in heartbeat, either.

But I reckon it would be more because there is every chance he'll win a league medal, play in a champions league final and play in front of 90K every week.

Mind you, he's rumoured to have turned down United...!

But I do agree, if you want to become regarded as one of the best players in the world it is a pull to be at a famous club. And I am absolutely 100% sure that Robinho would take a move to Barca right now.

good to see some good debate on here and not the usual "FFS Robi is City through and through, delete this thread" etc.

I've been posting since before last January's transfer window that I believe Hughes would let Robinho go and Robinho would take a move. the problem for me has always been finding someone who would pay the money. Now it seems we have someone.

I don't think it's anything to do with us needing money, or his mates leaving, or even our ambition.

I think that hughes can see that he doesn't suit the Premier League. He needs time on the ball to make things happen. That's why he only played well for us when we were ripping teams apart and they were throwing men forward. Not when we were 1-0 down and up against it. In those games he loses possession too much and puts us on the back foot.

I think he will show his undoubted class at Barca. In a slower league he will play as well as he does for Brazil. I think there are very few players in the world who would not want to go there. I don't think City will stand in his way.

Overall, I don't think this move is a disaster for City and it's certainly a good one for Robinho. I think we'll replace him. And I'd love it if Ribery was that replacement.

I really dont know why Hughes would think this, Rob has proved himself in a fairly average Pl side last season. Rob may suit a different style poss with liverpool, arsenal

think he does absolutely in love with city(all he has ever done is big us up), but i think he prefers the spanish league as most superstars do. lets face it we would rather watch say... barca vs zaragoza than liverpool vs wolves. good luck if you leave robi, but i hope you stay
