I still think we'd be getting a good deal if we signed him for under £25m. We'd get a good two or three years out of him and another couple of titles.

We can get £20m out of Milan for Dzeko, so our net spend will essentially be nothing, especially now it seems that Santa Cruz is finally on his way out.

I see it as a decent gamble. If we keep RVP fit and don't overplay him I reckon he'll be a great 1st choice striker for 2 years and a great 3/4th choice for a further 2 years.

Trying to drive up the price for us. Why else would the old prick go on rag TV to publicly declare it?

He's probably trying to flog season tickets. If they don't sell out every game, how is Sir Bobby ticket tout going to make his pin money.

Spot on - for season ticket sales only.

The money side of it doesnt interest me. FFP is a load of bollocks as far as im concerned and Paris have just basically said "Fuck off Platini you stupid twat we will do what we want"

For me now this is an ideal opportunity to kick a man when he is down. Taggert wants VP, Bobby wants VP. We should make sure we get him.

We would be getting the player of the season from last year and someone who will score 20 plus goals guaranteed with the service he would get at our place.

After last season we dont want to see the rags coming back and winning it again. We have to grind their fcking noses into the dirt and see that old pisshead off to his nursing home.

Slap in the £25m thats needed and get the deal done this week. Adebayor Cruz, Bridge and Kolo will all be off the wage bill soon enough.

I'm curious as to why Ferguson would announce they'd made a bid. He may be lots of things but he isn't stupid and he never, ever, does anything without a strategic goal in mind.

The season ticket argument is not without merit but I'm struggling to see why he would invite ridicule upon his club if they failed. Perhaps he realises that RVP wants to come to us and it is merely a tool to drive the price up, or perhaps the opposite is true and he's marking his territory.

Make no mistake this next season will define the future bragging rights for the next decade between our two clubs and he knows it. They win it and they can keep up, we win it and they're fucked for a whole series of reasons.

Interesting times.

I posted on here a couple of days after the still-warming last day of the season match, and I was of the view that the rags (and baconface, in particular) would come out fighhting.

History has shown that over the past 20 years when they've been threatened (Blackburn, Arsenal, Chelsea) they go out and spend big. I thought they would this close season, and the £20m spent so far is just a taster.

I reckon he's pinning his own credibility in getting RvP to the swamp, and that he's pretty confident of doing it. I reckon he'll all but match our offer, and hope that history makes up any shortfall.

Why go public? He needs to rally the troops. The players, the fans, the sponsors... they all need a lift. They all need to believe that the rags are still in pitching with the best of them.

I know Tolm laughed off the thought of RvP going to the rags, but I wouldn't be nearly as sure as that.

If they win the tussle, he'll be on braying about how they are still the choice of champions, and if they fail, it'll be a brave effort that couldn't match the ludicrous sums being offered by City.

It's a win-win in his befuddled mind.

He's announced it to let RVP know he wants him I think we aren't that bothered if we get him or not if we were we said here you go boom 25m! Local news are reporting the scum have offered 15m all we should do is match what ever the other clubs have bid and leave it t RVP to make his mind up

I was being a little tongue in cheek when I mentioned the season ticket sales. It is however worth noting that they are currently trying to raise funds by floating on the stock market. A bid for Van Persie, a player who will cost in the region of £20M and will have little or no resale value and has struggled with injury throughout his career, could be the rags way of trying to tell everyone that they do have money, they are still competing for the best, and they will be a sound investment.
Whatever the reason they have for completely changing their transfer policy with a bid for VP, you can bet your life there's more to it than just getting a good player.

It's all very well talking about their history, but don't forget the romance, dear boy. They have lots of it, so I hear.
