Romeo Lavia

I can’t be the only one stumped by this. Is it just stubbornness? I trust Pep & co to know which players are good enough, but aside from seeing him and seeing he’s brilliant myself, I also know for a fact that Liverpool and Klopp, Pochettino and Chelsea etc know a good player when they see one - not to mention Kompany who sent him to us in the first place.

Genuinely I’m mystified!

It seems DM is the hardest spot for City to recruit for as over the last 7 years of Pep.. it's been a very exclusive club there.. Yaya, Fernandinho, Gundogan, Rodri. (practically all City legends)

Maybe the answer is simple.. Pep wants a different type of DM.. like Kalvin and Romeo could play DM really good for 99% of teams but not for us..

That's why I'm not really convinced Kalvin will just magically get good enough for us and I do think we need another DM (unless Perrone is trusted by Pep long term, but is not physically strong enough for the PL yet).

Locatelli is up for grabs for half of lavia’s price if we were to dip,for a dm

The thing I don’t get is that we’re always competing with Liverpool, United, Chelsea etc for the same players. Every year.

This year, we need a CM with energy in midfield, spent a lot of time chasing Bellingham, Rice, looked at MacAllister etc.

But the one player those teams want, in a position we need, that we are for some reason not at all interested in, is Lavia, a quality, home grown (as far as regs count) player in the position we need, at a price we can afford and we get a sell on % so effectively it’s cheaper for us than anyone else.

They know the player better than any of us and they clearly have a different opinion to you. From the little I have seen this season, I would probably agree with them.

It certainly won't be stubbornness.

We don't need him. We're well stacked for DMs.
We could do with someone to replace Gundogan but Lavia isn't that player.

Perhaps watching the kid week in week out for 2 yrs, they may have a different opinion. They know this player better than the said managers

We couldnt stop them with any clause, we get a sell on and thats it. The player will always get a choice.
Not one directly stopping it but we can certainly add first refusals giving us the option of bringing them back or if not that then bigger sell on clauses if they sell during a certain timeframe or even if they sell to a league rival etc. Plenty of things we can add to give ourselves a better deal should one of them end up on the verge of signing for a direct rival.

Southampton are potentially making near £30 million profit in 12 months. we sold him cheaply so that we could include buy back clauses that now look as though we are never going to even get the option of utilising and will see him end up at our biggest rival over the last 5 years. Mistakes have been made for that to happen, that will not have been the intention, which is fine, it can happen, we just have to learn and ensure we don't make it again anytime soon.

Perhaps we don't see it as a mistake. There are going to be good players that we let go. It doesn't necessarily mean that they were the right players (or good enough) for us at that time, or now, though.
