Romeo Lavia

Wow. This is a real surprise.

Not to say he doesn't deserve it, he does, but Delap, or possibly Palmer, must have thought he had it sewn up.

To win ahead of Delap and Palmer, after the seasons they have had, is incredibly impressive for a holding midfielder so young. Unreal prospect, get him in the first team.

I'm not surprised at all, while Delap and Palmer have impressed they have also shown inconsistency.Lavia has been an 8/10 at least in every game.

Lets also not forget he has had to contend with a completely different routine and lifestyle in a country he previously knew little about.

The kid has been a revelation, and hopefully it will be the springboard for an amazing career.

Yeah but let's be real here. A consistent holding midfield player doesn't usually (or almost ever) win awards ahead of record breaking attacking players. 27 goals in 22 apps for Delap (for the EDS) is unreal.
To be better that THAT is some doing. Regardless of whether Delap's performances were consistent or not.

It does when he is the standout performer in most games he plays.Delap will make headlines because that what goals get you,and yes he has done brilliantly in some games, but you can't ignore or escape Lavia's quality and influence, and thankfully its been recognised.

As I said, he fully deserves it. I am absolutely not trying to imply Delap or Palmer were better or more deserving.

It’s just unusual and surprising to see an, albeit brilliant, defensive player get recognition ahead of a more fashionable goal scorer or playmaker.

Congrats to Romeo, hopefully one of many honours he can earn in a City shirt.

He is absolute quality.

What's even more astounding is that not only did he not turn 17 until January 6th 2021 but he only played 1 EDS game in 2020. He started in the U18s and didn't step up to the EDS until 18/01/21

Can be no doubt he's going to be training with the 1st team next season while playing EDS games and maybe the odd 1st team cup game at least.

Does anyone know how this award was judged? - coaches, peer players?

The EDS seems to be finding some good players but timing/circumstances might restrict their chances. If Lavia and Delap were a couple of years older then they might have had a shot at being backups for the main guys in their positions for the first team. Both probably need a bit more experience at this stage though.

The timing is a shame,i'd love them to stay and be part of the first team, picture next season, but i believe both would benefit more by going on loan and following the fine examples of THB and Rodgers.
