I want the lad to stay. At the very least I'd like a buy-back clause.
However 8.8m is a lot of money. Before you all jump on me, let me explain.
When you dispose of an asset (which is what footballers are) you take the the entire profit in that year's numbers. Rony Lopes as a young lad whose come through has a low residual value, his initial transfer fee divided by his contract length and the odd additional fee added here and there. This means almost all of the 8.8m will show on our P&L this year.
8.8m exactly covers Sterlings transfer fee cost for the financial year. 44m divided by 5 year contract.
If you're a City fan thats gutted yet another young lad has moved on, allow yourself just a moment to be pleased this is an excellent bit of business. Even better if we add a buy back clause.
I don't agree giving youngsters a chance is a high risk, but when you can afford to take a lower risk you do especially when by selling an unproven kid you can pay for a proven player, albeit for only a year.
