We will never know if young players are good enough unless we give them a chance. There have been many players that have made an instant impact because of their youth and confidence, or just the fact the opposition didn't know their strengths. It seems that in England many then fall away as they struggle for consistency or make headlines and become marked men in games. Walcott, Oxlade, Wilshere, Kane and the numerous wingers all touted as being world class have failed to show their talents on a consistent basis. Kane had a great season last time out but has failed to score in most of his games for Spurs since before the end of last season.
The pressure on City to succeed mean we'd much rather a proven talent than one that was untried and untested at the top level. What does concern me is that we loan players like Rekik, Denayer and Lopes out but to clubs where you still can't claim they're worthy of starting for City. Denayer's been our closest and we then buy Otamendi and essentially stick him down to 5th choice until Demichelis leaves.
At some stage City will have to start taking a punt with our young players or this whole philosophy and work on academy level coaching will be lost because players will think "I'll never get a game there so what's the point?".
I think there is still a slight gap between the quality of the first team and of the players emerging from the academy. The best bet is continual loans/ sales with buy back clauses. Hopefully one of the current crop of youngsters plays so well that they can't be ignored. In my opinion though, if Barker or Roberts had an incredible game in the league cup and scored two and got two assists, they'd be out of the side for the next league game anyway. We have a huge pool of talent, particularly around the 16-18year old mark.
I do believe that we'll start to see academy products integrated in the next few seasons where opportunities will be available as our senior players reach retirement. At full back there are clear opportunities to promote our academy players, and possibly buy in an experienced player to nurture them. In midfield there's definitely the possibility to integrate one or two players. If Nasri and Navas leave there's no reason why we can't promote from within as well.
People talk about the solid core - Hart, Kompany, Yaya, Silva, Aguero. As good as Navas has played it's all been because of the space he's been allowed while the opposition concerns themselves with Sterling/Silva/Aguero. I think one of our academy players could have done just as good a job if surrounded by that talent. We won't know until we try and play them. As competitive as the league might be in people's heads, young players have been used at Liverpool and have helped improve their first team. Similarly at the rags. Though they've been bought from elsewhere, they've improved them. As long as you have world class players to support them (which Liverpool and the rags lack) then they'll be okay and can thrive when playing alongside that level of talent.
