Rooney "Average" quote

I don't know anyone could call him average, 32 goals for England, 183 goals for United and he will beat their highest goalscoring record before he is 30 he might be an absolute **** but hes a brilliant footballer.
Agreed. Doesn't even play as a proper striker and still has a ridiculous goal-scoring record. Very versatile as well, he's been their best CM this season.

I think Rooney will soon be plying his trade in midfield on a permanent basis, rather than up top.

There's no doubt he is better there than spearheading an attack.
Disagree. He's a good CM but def a better striker. He's consistently been a top scorer in the league despite playing in a subpar team. It's because they've haven't got someone who can tackle in midfield. They need a Barry/Yaya type.

I don't understand the adulation this guy gets from a lot of people. The guy is a bastard on & off the pitch. How any kid can view this illiterate moron as a role model is beyond me.

I don't mean a CM, as such, more of a Sneijder, who is, on occasion, able to play in CM if needs be. The signing of RVP, to me, signalled Fergie's intent on playing Rooney deeper and they seem to be linking up quite well. Rooney has certainly played a deeper role in the last few weeks and, for me, has looked quite good there.

Regarding his goalscoring ability, I don't disagree that he's a decent goalscorer, per sé, however when you get the number of chances United do, it's not surprising that a decent finisher can get a shit load of goals. In truth, he's missed a hell of a lot of sitters to, as did Andy Cole. Both players could have scored a lot more.

Even if he did drop into a more AM role, he'd still pop up with at least 15 goals a season, simply because of the number of chances he will get and his ability to score from range also.

Now they have RVP, they can afford to drop Rooney back, something they couldn't do without RVP as Fergie didn't have the trust he has in him, in the likes of Welbeck and/or Hernandez.

So what if he is a twat? If he played for us and got 30 goals a season would you really care? On the pitch he is utter class and his goal scoring records reflects this.

The quote from the Times in my original post said WR was an "average INTERNATIONAL" player. If he is as good (at scoring) as Messi, yet Crouch has a better record for England, then Crouch is better than Messi..............
What he has done for ManU is nowt to do with quote's main point

Messi's not that great at international level. In fact he's pretty bad if you look at how well Portugal do with a b-list supporting cast while Messi has an a-list supporting cast, yet Portugal usually go further than Argentina and look better against top teams.

International level isn't really fair to judge by.

Look at Messi 2012 International stats. He has a better record than Ronaldo.
