wow! i remember running outside the home and screaming as loud as i ever screamed in my life ...after that goal !

Lol, I know what you mean. Never seen my grandmas cat move so fast when that went it. If it had been any older it probably would have had a heart attack!

The penalty decision was possibly THE worst I can recall during 35 yrs watching City.
Alan Wilkie....what a t#sser

That game was one of the biggest kicks in the teeth I remember as a Blue.

I sat in the Stretford End and there were other Blues around me, including a really gobby, very attractive girl who was stood up abusing Utd players the lot. At one point, the Utd fans were singing "You're the shit of Manchester" and the bloke in the eat to my right, a southerner, joined in. I saw red and turned round and sung right in his face "You don't come from Manchester". He wasn't happy.

Coming out from the Stretford End, hearing they had drawn Swindon home in the quarters, and all celebrating and singing in that tunnel, was grim.

I had a drive back to London to contemplate, along with a relegation battle.

Even setting aside any City-bias, that must remain the most inexplicable penalty award I've EVER seen in 30 years of watchng football.

If I remember rightly, Des Lynam at half-time dropped the facade and just said "that was never a penalty" (or words to that effect). A few years later on "Match of the 90's" Mark and Lard dissected the decision, showing the "incident" from every possible angle, at super-slow speed. It was NEVER a penalty!

I've spoken to Alan Wilkie about this, as he is a referees assessor and our paths crossed a year or so ago. I'd also spoken to David Allison about it, who also used to be a Premier League referee and is now the Football League referees manager.

Both of them at different times said that Frontzeck had a habit of subtlety holding onto players at corners and actually he'd been warned about it a few times before the penalty. So when the penalty was awarded, the two people who were probably the least surprised about it were Wilkie and Frontzeck himself.

Well they might say that as an excuse.

The truth is he never held anyone, subtle or otherwise.

You don't award a penalty for an offence someone committed on another occasion. Especially when every other player on the pitch does the same thing.

Those comments make me even angrier.

Maybe Wilkie was keeping an eye on Frontzeck. But it affected his judgement so badly he made a grave error.

It still hurts, more now that I know that prick never even acknowledged his mistake.

At the risk of shooting the messenger, what a load of fucking shite.

In a way though, it confirms exactly what I thought at the time, he was looking to award a penalty against us. The c*nt.

Roy Keane had a habit at the time of kicking everything that moved and abusing the referee but he still manged to see out the game.

That decision stunk the place out and still does to this day. That pathetic reasoning from Wilkie makes me even more suspicious.
