Ross Barkley

If he has a top World Cup every **** will be all over him. Could become a 45m bracket player within a month.

Everton will be buzzing.

I think everyone already knows he's in that bracket. I've been surprised at the number of people who have said he's not that good or that he's a risk. Luke Shaw at 35 million pounds is more of a risk than Barkley would be at 45. IMO if Barkley gets the right coaching and plays in the right team he'll be the best midfield player in England in the next 3/4 years.

I hate the fact I rate him so much because part of me just knows he's gonna end up a rag!

Totally agree ... he's probably the one of this generation of England players. He'll be even better than Sterling, who IMO is going to be world class.

City need to have a contingency for if clubs go bidding for him this summer to ensure we're in the race.

Financially I think it's just about doable. 49 million plus the sales of Rodwell and Richards (who are being replaced by Sagna and Fernando) should bring us 10 million. With that 59 you take off 14 for Fernando/Sagna leaving 45 ... you can then spend 25 on a CB leaving us 20 million.

Now I think it's totally feasible to offer Everton 20 million this summer and 20 million next summer for Barkley, get round the FFP sanctions, and still get the player.

That's if we don't factor in the sale of Milner ... which will bring us another 10 million minimum.

I think the only problem would be that if he becomes attainable, then you will get the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and the rags offering 40 million up front which would make our offer less appealable to Everton

Would love to see him at City tho, if not this summer then next

He's going to want to stay in the north west IMO. It's going to come down to us or the rags. No doubt the rags will offer the money up front ... but City could offer many other things to incentivise the deal, not least of which could be players like Rodwell/Milner/Richards. We could also look at sending someone like Lopes on loan there. We could right off the fee for Barry.

I'd like to think that the Spanish connection will also help. I suspect that there's at the very least a cordial relationship between Txiki and Martinez.

He seems like a proper north west lad so id like to think he would stay up here

But do you ever get the impression that young English players see us as a club that don't give youth a chance? Or at the least, don't give English players a chance?

I know its a boring cliche, and a lot of the media try and peddle the crap that City isn't a place for English talent, but it would worry me if players like Barkley had this in the back of their head. It's just a case of there not being any quality out there more than anything.

But I guess it would be Txiki's job to reassure him that he would get as many games here as anywhere else

Rags paid £28 million for that fat tw*t when he was 18 and that turned out alright, on the pitch especially

Not saying he is worth 45 million, but if we were to pay that his value would only increase as he gets older

IMO Barkley's talent level is comparable to Max Meyer at Schalke, who is younger, has that same ability to burst through the middle of the pitch past players, and who Liverpool are supposedly bidding £8m for. That English tax is going up and up.

Barkley (and Luke Shaw) is best off staying at Everton for at least 3 years. They have a good manager who plays good football and he is starting every week. Rodwell ignored other clubs for a while and got his big move after proving himself, just a shame his injuries have let him down.

At City Barkley has Toure, Silva and Nasri that play in his position. united have Rooney, Mata and Kagawa, Chelsea have Oscar and look like signing Fabregas and Arsenal have Ozil, Cazola and Ramsey. Why leave when he plays every week.

I don't think he would fit in here, not unless he all of a sudden dramatically improves his vision and passing ability. He has the same weakness that all English young players have, he doesn't look up when he has the ball, he just puts his head down and tries to power forwards. I don't know whether you can really change that in a player once they're as old as 20, there is very little evidence of players doing so. Unless he miraculously becomes a playmaker overnight, he's going to have to really up his goal threat to warrant an inclusion in a top team as a number 10.

This thread is getting a little out of hand:

1) Where are there any credible sources linking us with a move for him?

2) His price has gone up from about £20m in January to £40m+ if he has a good world cup. We all know he is NOWHERE near worth that much and that his value is being determined by a combination of English player premium and World Cup hype.

3) He's had one very good season in the Prem, that is all.

4) He's not a city-type player. At the moment his game is too direct and raw. Given time he could be coached to be more technically and tactically astute but why pay a fortune for a player only to adapt him to our style when our academy is supposed to be taking kids from 8 years of age and teaching them how to play?

5) He plays in a position that we are stacked in at the minute. He certainly can't play defensive midfield a la Fernandinho, Garcia and Fernando and he isn't good enough for us to want to drop Silva, Nasri or Yaya, so I say it again, why pay so much money for him?

I think a bit of rational thinking has been left at the door of this thread.

Agree with a lot of that. I would love Barkley at City- there are certain players you have to accept are an investment- to use a cliche.

It is important now to have English players, but buying Barkley would be more than just fitting someone into satisfy a quota. He is a genuinely quality player, and will, with the right guidance, become world class.

The amount of money that a good English player can generate for you in terms of worldwide sales etc is phenomenal.

It is our poor record with English players that will hinder a move for the player, but I'd go for him at all costs. We would regret it if we didn't. A genuinely very, very talented English player.
