Ross Barkley

Although undoubtedly a great talent and prospect it shows the reason why clubs look foreign for signings......price! Greg dyke can winge all he wants about city and English players etc but when we talk about players like barkley @ £40-50m, shaw @ £30-35m, llanna @ £30-35m then can the fa not see why clubs go foreign? These 3 players have only had one great season each and their prices are as much if not dearer than sergio, dave, yaya etc!!! Why should any club pay well over the odds just because these players are english?? For the price talked about barkley you could get reus and draxler!! What deal would you go for??

Built into his price will be the fact he is English- there is often a premium, as we know.

We have a pretty poor record with English players, so I think that may put him off, BUT that is heavily down to Rodwells injury- he may be a lot closer to the England team was he not permanently injured.

I also think Barkley is good enough, or certainly has the potential to be good enough, and we have the perfect players he can learn from- especially Yaya, providing he stays.

A second thing that should be remembered is the marketing that can be done on the back of an England star, and sales. No one will ever emulate what Beckham has achieved, but being an England star helped him.

Similarly, Rooney is so marketable due to being Englands 'star player'. Supporters worldwide love a high quality English player. No, he will never be as marketable as Aguero, but would be very useful in this department.

I can't see us going for Barkley this summer with the transfer limit we've got. He would also be a risk as plenty of promising young players haven't gone on to fulfill their potential, especially Evertonians (Jeffers, Cadamarteri, even Shrek to an extent), but could we afford to let Chelsea etc get him.

Not sure if the rules are different here, but one thing which you see on the continent is buying the first option eg Barca with Neymar. Also not sure if it has to be a player in a different association, but would it be possible for us to pay Everton for first option to buy him next summer if he improved how people expect?

The point being made by Greg Dyke and being missed by you is the not cost of English players in the transfer market but the lack of them.
Selling Barklay, Shaw and Llanna for £10 million does not solve the problem if there is no other English lads with the same ability to replace them.

It's simple supply and demand. There are very few elite English players or even young players who look like they are going to develop into elite players. Because of the quotas and the romanticizing of the England national team by club officials and some of the public clubs are desperate for that talismanic English player. The selling clubs know it so they hold out for the big money because it's the only way to appease their fan-base. Selling academy players is never popular but if you get 100m like for bale it goes over easier.

The 'must have 8 homegrown players in premier league' has really failed to do its job. Was clearly brought in to help get English players to the top level, but instead it put English player prices too high, and forced the better teams to look abroad for a player instead. As for Barkley-great player, not good enough for us yet and we can't loan a player who's gonna cost 4/5 of our budget. Give him another season or two more at Everton, his price can't go up much more

I don't have much time for Wenger but on this I agree he said effectively that, and also said that clubs would divert their attentions to buying up 17yr olds and filling their academys with young foreign players because once they turned 21 nationality did not matter.

I'd sign him - well worth a punt. Anything over £25m is laughable.

Good point but at £25m you won't sign him in this market. It's a joke - he will end up at the Rags for £40m.

I'd sign him in a heartbeat. He is a proper footballer and he is English - like it or not that is important nowadays.
He may well end up at the swamp - but I dearly hope he doesn't.
£40m is OTT but then again £27m for Luke Shaw is genuinely laughable. The market price is the market price.
