There was a John Willie Lees Cabaret Bar behind the Arndale. I went to a couple of alternative music nights there. I'm sad to hear it might have closed.

You could get into it from the Arndale bus station.

As a lad of 17 i used to goin there most dinner times. Also went in the Swan with two necks opposite and play on their new fangled 'track and field' machine.
The Yates' opposite the arndale market was good for getting anything. I remember a smack-head kicking off with me because i wouldn't buy a watch off him.
The roughest i went in in town must be the one behind Chorlton St bus station that was frequented by the scummiest end of the 'gay' spectrum.

What was the Metropolitan in Didsbury called before it was turned into whatever it is now? I used to love it in there, but by god the back room was rough. I remember the gaffer walking around with a massive dog on a lead and just about everyone in there taking or dealing drugs. We used to think it was the roughest place in the world until we started going out in Hulme and Whalley Range. I remember a bloke trying to sell me acid in the Whalley, then threatening me when I said 'no thanks'.

Like someone said, if you felt uncomfortable in these places you were probably in the wrong place. Keep your head down and respect everyone and you were probably going to be all right.
last time i went in there it was full of lawyers and students

Someone mentioned the Phoenix in Newton Heath, most pubs in that area are rough in all fairness!

I actually remember the night of, well I think it was supposed to be a pool or darts match (something was going on anyway) and it was `The Cock `o` the North`( changed to the Talisman) v `The benchill` at `The Cock`, was like a scene from the wild west, both closed down now, think the old Cock has actually been knocked down.

The benchill has a rep that's for sure, I think The Silver Birch has replaced it now since it got changed to a housing office,
The talisman got knocked down the other year :( .......... the cornishmen is still a cracking pub though.

Is the Woodpecker on Selsted Road still open?

the bridge in altrincham must been i dive for the outsiders cos its a total dump, i remember one lanlord wanted to have a beach party and wanted to get a few tonnes of sand in and was goining to spread it all over the pub and he was in the process of putting a fishtank in a fruit machine so you could see the fish behind the reels but he did a runner with the taking that week! very strange man

Used to go in the Pheonix on Briscoe lane in Newton Heath with my Grandad. Rough as fuck area, would probably think twice about going in without a "local" nowadays. The only time women came in was when they were dragging the men out or planting a full sunday dinner on a poor, pissed up blokes head.

It took sixteen pages for Newton Heath to get a mention.....amazing, lol.

Add The Railway, White Lion and Horseshoe in N/H to the list too.

The black Boy in Eccles. It's shut now thank god.
The 1st time I went in a woman threw her Stiletto shoe through the window and it landed on our table along with a shower of broken glass. It majorly kicked off outside with the Landlord and a few other men and women. We were locked in the pub till it all calmed down. A very scary 30 mins I can tell you!

Also the last time I went in, there was someone sat at a table blatantly sniffing cocaine off a key. Fucking hated that place. I only went in twice!

It had it's moments as did The Diamond XX and The Ellesmere near by.All complete sh1tholes.
