If you work in a company with a HR department just go along and ask them.willy eckerslike said:malg said:By the way, for those who are on about Hodgson not intending to cause offence - that's all fine and dandy, but in the workplace it doesn't matter if you mean to cause offence. It's not the intent, it's the perception. If one of the players was offended then that's what matters.
I don't for a second think Hodgson is racist, but he's a fucking idiot for saying what he did. As I've said before, have people in football missed the last 25 years?
Ah well, it all bodes well for England's preparation for the World Cup......
So what you are saying is that no-one is allowed to say anything that might be perceived as offensive whether intended or not?
BOLLOCKS
What we are seeing is the inability of individuals to understand how communication works. In other words, we are being dictated to, and controlled by, the stupid.
Scenario: you are speaking to a friend and tell an 'off colour' joke, or make a remark to them, and your friend doesn't take offence - all fine and dandy. However, if a colleague over hears that remark and takes offence at it, regardless of the fact that you didn't intend any offence, and that they weren't involved in the conversation, you'd still have to speak with HR about the comments.
It's the world we now live in.
Ah yes, very aware of how it works in the office having had to manage such situations down the years. My office persona differs quite a lot from my real persona - I would argue most white men do the same. What I do and say in management isn't always what I believe in.
Unfortunately it appears that someone has misinterpreted Hodgson's communcation. An intelligent person would have realised it was a joke relating to the early days of space exploration where monkeys were used (I assume this is what is was about, haven't heard it yet). An intelligent person would also make allowances for the age difference and general attitude of whoever was speaking to determine if they were making a racist comment.
What appears to have happened, is that someone has seen an opportunity to force Hodgson into a humbling apology purely based on the difference in colour of skin between the two. Would this have been reported if Hodgson was black? Who really is the racist in all this?
The sad thing is that if innocent remarks are continually seen as something else, we will continue to see white men driven towards extreme views, which makes dealing with real racist issues all the harder.
