It's always a worrying sign when the England players love their manager. They're all overpaid overhyped and underworked and any manager that allows them to remain that way will be loved. Capello gave his side a kick up the arse and my god they hated it. If Capello had have been in charge of this bunch we'd have been so much better.
His mistake was taking a group that had played on average about 50 games each and do a high altitude training camp that rather than get them to peak conditioning just absolutely ruined them physically. We were spent and that cost us.
Woy on the other hand had a side that was largely "fresh" by modern standard. Kane had played a fuck load but Rooney had been injured in spells, the full backs had been rotated for Spurs, Cahill had been in and out of the Chelsea team. Sturridge had just come back from about 18 months off. Vardy had only had one game a week for about 4 months. Alli had spent a nice month off before the Euro's.
Physically there should have been no issue, so why was there no movement?
For starters it's because Rooney isn't a central midfielder. He can't run up and down all game, he's never been fit enough. He couldn't pass or walk by about 60 minutes of yesterdays game. Secondly it's because when you pick Alli, Rooney, Vardy, Kane and Sturridge and play them at the same time, the 4-3-3 formation you were hoping for inevitably ends up as a 4-1-5 with those 5 all within about 20 yards of each other.
So where was the width? Well that was from our full backs. Except, it's quite easy to mark them when everyone else is stood still in a central area.
The Sturridge and Vardy change won us the game against Wales so Woy starts with is next match. If Hart had have scored the equalizer from that corner last night, he'd have probably been up front in the next game.
We knew our defence was poor - Joe didn't really help with that either. We knew we lacked creativity in midfield (and energy it turned out). We knew we lacked width with only Sterling picked.
We should have beaten Iceland but the result was because of the three things we knew when Woy announced his final squad.
